CHAPTER FOURTEEN

ALRIC

SONIA RETURNED, BUT I stayed sat down, staring at the burnt-out fire. I didn’t have the energy to do anything else.

“Any luck?”

She shook her head. All day we’d been trying to hunt, but it seemed every corner we turned, every time we found the trail of some prey, a wolf was waiting for us.

They were staking us out.

The rest of the pack returned in dribs and drabs, over the next few hours. Freya had, at the very least, managed to scavenge a skinful of nuts and berries, which we scarpered down in a matter of seconds, our raging stomachs demanding more.

I had lost count of how many days had passed. It felt like we’d been living like this for years. Every evening I wanted so desperately to project to Matthew, to hold him in my arms, even if I couldn’t feel it. But I needed to conserve every ounce of energy I had, in case the Sundown Trail wolves attacked our camp. Sleep was one of the few blissful reprises I had from hunger right now, and I wanted to savour it as much as I could.

“Who’s turn is it to go on watch tonight?” Gareth asked.

We’d been sitting in deathly silence since everyone got back. We barely had the energy to talk, let alone do anything else. Freya attempted half-heartedly to carve something out of a piece of bark, but gave up after it started cracking and splintering.

“I’ll do it,” I said.

I couldn’t remember whose turn it actually was, but I didn’t want to inflict it on anyone else.

“I’m going to go for a walk,” Freya mumbled.

“Be careful,” Gareth said.

Taking care wouldn’t do much. Whether we went out or stayed put, we were under constant threat.

A few minutes later, a cry resounded from the forest. We sprang into action, running to her aid. She wasn’t far from the camp. Freya stood in a small clearing, the thing that had made her scream lying in front of her.

A deer carcass, mutilated beyond recognition. Its head had been cut off and put on a stake, which stood ominously a few metres away, and its body was torn to pieces, legs broken, skin lacerated in every area. Its guts spilt out in a pile, slowly drying in the afternoon sun.

Smeared over the entire body was dirt, leaves, and what smelt like shit. Freya turned away, covering her mouth with her hand. She retched, but there wasn’t anything left to vomit.

“We have to leave,” Sonia said, escorting her away.

We gathered back around the burnt-out fire, still shaken from the sign left for us.

“That thing is going to rot,” Gareth said. “We need to do something about it.”

“I don’t want to touch it,” Freya said. Her face was flushed white, her eyes crinkled into unrecognisable disgust. She chewed on her lip, trying to hold tears in.

“We could dump it in the river,” Gareth suggested.

“They’ll be waiting for us there,” Sonia muttered. “There’s nothing we can do about it.”

The image of the deer hid behind my eyes, flashing before me every time I closed them.
