Rest Of Pieces

A buzz from Jimmy’s pocket broke him from his post battle semi-fog. He slipped it from his pocket.

Nice work! You saved the world… for now! [Trophy icon]

This was followed up by another notification.

And defeated Annihilation!!

Satisfied with the work he’d done, Jimmy put away his cell.

Molly dug through smoking trash, pieces of robot, and broken chunks of ceiling, similar to how Jimmy imagined junkyard dogs looked rummaging for their next meal in a public landfill. She sniffed and wiped her nose as she tossed junk aside.

Jimmy grabbed a rolled-up newspaper off the floor once he realized his denim flaming-bat backpack was still smoldering on the floor. He smacked it several times. Quickly he extinguished the last flickering flame that danced on one strap.

After pulling a shriveled black nugget from underneath a battered toaster, Molly held it up to the sky and inspected it.

“I think this is one of her arms,” she said, her voice as low and solemn as a New Orleans’ funeral dirge. Jimmy saw a tear slide down her cheek.

“Oh yeah,” he said as he remembered using her doll as a flash-bang grenade. “It was a noble sacrifice. She made a great sacrifice to help save this world.”

Molly cradled the object as she leaned over. Her shoulders shook as she sobbed lightly.

The elation of the hard fought and won victory against the alien invaders seemed a little less joyful as he watched her crying silently over her well-done baked doll. Friendly fire was never easy to accept.

“Sorry you lost your friend in such a violent, fiery death fireball,” Jimmy said in as compassionate a way as he could muster. It brought to mind the retired gunfighter who had to console the citizens after having just saved the western town from the oil baron at the expense of a few dozen citizens. Including the town blacksmith.

For Jimmy, he didn’t quite share Molly’s sadness at the death of her evil doll. But he truly did appreciate her toy’s sacrifice. Perhaps mentioning the noble way in which Abigail had met her horrible, burning death would give Molly some comfort.

First he laughed. Then he followed that up with, “Did you see the way she spread her arms and stuck to Deveroux?” He chuckled in the way he’d done so much through this journey. The chuckling made his sore jaw ache even more. “Man, she really gave him a severe face hug.”

Molly lifted her head. She gave him a look, her smoke-blackened cheeks tear-streaked. “What do you mean?”

“I mean… well, the way she clamped onto the goalie’s face…” Jimmy said, stammering, not sure what she didn’t understand. He pretended to hug an invisible person. “I commanded her to hug his face and she did. You were right there and saw it.”

“Did you hit your head? She was a doll. Not alive, stupid.”

Not sure what to make of this all, Jimmy looked at Clancy to see if he was listening to the deteriorating conversation. Clearly Molly was spiraling out of control and losing what little sanity she had left.
