"Is he your ex or your friend? Maybe you should decide which one!"

"I have to go, the doctor's calling me," I lie to avoid the fight that's about to start.

For the rest of the morning, I’m careful to avoid my (probably enraged) CEO's calls. I go and see Raphaël several times – he is still asleep. I talk to his parents, take Clem to the bakery next door so we can stuff ourselves with "well deserved" pastries, send a few emails to Lily to make sure she hadn't skipped her second day at King Productions. I wait hour after hour for Raphaël to wake up so I can talk to him. Talk to him about what? I have no idea. It would be completely hypocritical of me to say I'm here for him. After all, I'm the one who asked him to stay away from me.

At about four pm, his mother comes to get me in the waiting room and tells me Raphaël is asking for me. I leave Clémentine and Niels to continue their debate about germs – an obsession of Niels' – and go to room 113, shaking like a leaf. There is one particular topic I would like to avoid, and knowing my ex, he'll bring it up... I go into the room feeling tense and almost uncomfortable. I look at him, and there is a kind, grateful look in his eyes.

"Alma... Thank you for coming," he says in a tired voice, smiling at me.

"How do you feel?"

"A bit shaken up. And woozy," he jokes, pointing to his morphine pump.

"You scared me, Raph..."

" 'Raph?' Do you know how long it's been since you called me that?"

"No – does it matter?"

"It does to me."

Here we go...

"I'm not here to talk about us. I'm here for you. I wanted to make sure you were still in one piece."

"Did you get my flowers?"

"Yes... Raphaël, can we talk about something else?"

"No, this accident has opened my eyes. I have to make the most of my life, while I can."

"Yes, but..."

"Let me finish. Don't interrupt a man that's just woken up from a coma!" he jokes. "I still love you, Alma, I never stopped believing in us."

"Raphaël, stop."

"We were expecting a baby together. We were happy, weren't we?"

"I don't want to talk about that. Not now, not like this..."

"Give me a second chance! I want to give you the life you've dreamed about, start a family!" he yells, wincing with pain.

"Calm down. You need to rest. I'm going to go now," I say, walking toward the door.

"I won't give up, Alma," he murmurs, his voice breaking.

"I've turned the page, Raphaël. Take care of yourself."

The day, which still isn't over, has been long, exhausting and I'm about to leave the hospital when I hear a familiar voice behind me. It's Basile, who I called this morning, at the entrance to the waiting room.

"I hear he's doing well?" he asks, coming toward me.

"Yes, as well as possible, given the circumstances... He'll be happy to see you," I say, kissing him on the cheek.
