Lia sat astride my lap to keep the strain off her sore bottom, arms wrapped tightly around my neck, while her mount trudged along beside Uruz. Five suns of travel had tired her out, evident in how she’d stopped asking questions last night.

She glanced at the warriors watching us from the hill to our left. “They keep staring.”

“They’re making sure were not bringing any trouble,” I said. “Katedo leads the largest tribe, and the area he occupies always holds a lot of scouts. He takes the safety of everyone very serious.”

“It was fascinating to watch how you felt the ground for water.” She placed a kiss between the knives strapped to my chest. “How you found your way through the storm, and used the bird to scan the area ahead.”

“Makes me dizzy, this constant shifting in and out of their vision, but I can’t seem to stay inside them longer.” I stroked over her arm, her skin pink-streaked from the biting grit of the storm. “I’m sorry that you’ve had little opportunity to sleep.”

She yawned and rubbed her red-rimmed eyes. “Neither have you.”

Between leading us through the cover of the storm, finding water, and trapping small game, sleep had been hard to come by. “As soon as we reach their tree, we’ll talk to Katedo about the contract.”

“What makes you so sure that he’ll help?”

My stomach hollowed, and not only from hunger. “I consider him a friend. He would never turn me away.”

By Mekara, he better not, because the five of us desperately needed rest and temporary refuge. And a decent yoni, so we could get Lia’s scent under control, which grew thicker by the argos.

My eyes flicked to the scouts once more, the way they cocked their heads driving discomfort into my veins. In a sun or two, Lia would hit estrous, which put my body on high alert. Stupid suppressant did nothing to calm this edginess that heightened my senses, ready to jump whichever male dared to approach her.

I tapped the injector dangling beside a saddle bag. “You should probably poke yourself once more before we reach camp.”

“Again?” Too exhausted to lift her head and frown at me, she blew out an exhale. “You said I’m not even at the peak of my heat yet.”

And yet my muscles twitched with the promise of violence. “You have no idea how I’ve been fighting the urge to rut you right here in the saddle.”

Of course, she struggled up a tired smile and said, “All bark and no bite.”

I nipped her above the temple, sharing in how she giggled. “That suppressant isn’t working.”

“Jerem says it is.”

As if to piss me off, he rode up beside me, carrying a fat grin. “It is. You smell less sweet whenever—”

A growl pushed from deep within my chest as if on reflex. “Do not provoke me.”

Jerem laughed so hard he curled in his saddle. “After seeing how you tore the enclosure apart and slammed Fayo against a boulder? Never.”

“One of these suns, he’ll cut the
