Debunking Arguments

The rise of experimental philosophy has been accompanied by a rise in debunking arguments.1 I have already discussed two debunking arguments (in sections 2.6 and 4.3.5). But it is time to investigate the nature and propriety of debunking arguments more systematically. I will start by distinguishing different forms of debunking arguments, and I will adopt a particular, psychologically oriented approach to debunking. On the type of debunking argument that I will promote, one attempts to undercut the justificatory status of a belief by showing that the belief was formed by an epistemically defective psychological process. There are promising applications of such debunking arguments in metaethics, I’ll contend. In normative ethics, debunking arguments face greater obstacles. This will be important for the subsequent discussion of normative principles like retributivism that are bound up with responsibility (Chapter 6).
