Sixteen

There was a box on the small table Kim used for a desk. Why was there a box there? Did Zana put it in there? She glanced toward the princess, surprised to find the female absorbed in reading her datapad. Kim’s brows rose in surprise as she passed and noted that it was a human novel, but her lips twitched when she noted the title.

Dracula.

That wasn’t exactly what she had in mind when she challenged Zana to read a human book every week cycle. Although she allowed the princess free rein to choose her own books as a means to encourage her, Kim’s initial suggestions had been more along the lines of literary greats that highlighted the human experience through various points in history. A fictional tale of an undead creature of folklore was definitely far to the left of that.

And yet she had to smile at the rapt expression on Zana’s face as her eyes skimmed over the words. It gave her an idea. It would be an excellent segue into touching on folklore and myths. Those were just as important to human identity as anything else. The vampire lore would no doubt capture the female’s attention. Perhaps they’d actually be able to have an enjoyable session.

Deciding not to interrupt, Kim continued to her desk and set her bag down, her eyes fastening once more on the colorful box sitting there. It looked something like a gift box. It was a little different. It appeared more like it was constructed out of layered and dyed organic papier-mâché than the typical box wrapped with colorful paper that humans used for gift-giving. Yet it was similar enough that it sent a tingle of excitement zipping through her. Her eyes cut toward the door. Rykaal and Sijhord’s large bodies took up most of the space. At that same moment, Rykaal turned slightly and smiled over his shoulder at her. It lasted only a heartbeat, but her eyes widened with in sudden epiphany and she grinned down at the box in front of her.

Of course! Rykaal. He must have left a gift for her. Sijhord wouldn’t have had an opportunity to do so since he didn’t leave the nest until she did, but Rykaal left at a much earlier hour to begin his duties for the day. He must have had something ready to surprise her with. She didn’t know what the occasion was. It wasn’t her birthday. And she hadn’t heard of any gift-giving holidays coming up. She was certain that if it was Sijhord he would have blabbed about it. He was the least subtle male she knew. If there was a plan to give her a gift, he would have happily told her about it by now.

But it would be just like Rykaal to surprise her with a gift for no reason. She thought back to the tiny gifts he had surprised her with. The male was as sweet as the little treats that he sometimes picked up from the market to bring home to her.
