CHAPTER SEVEN

ATU DIDN’T RETURN to the villa.

Amelie knew because she’d crashed just before sunset, with jet lag hitting her hard enough so she’d barely got through dinner and a shower before sliding gratefully between the sheets. Only to wake up just after one a.m.

She’d known she should attempt to regulate her sleep patterns, but she’d risen anyway, with a biting need driving her into walking through the villa.

She’d pulled herself up short when she’d stood on the threshold of what was evidently the master bedroom, where the impeccably made, patently un-slept-in bed had made that unsettling feeling in her midriff return full-force.

What the hell was wrong with her? Wandering around Atu Quayson’s villa unnerved by the fact that she missed him?

The thought had sent her scurrying to bed, where she’d suffered restless sleep until the early hours.

Now she’d risen with a determination to do what she’d come here to do. Explore every facet of what had made the Q Cove Hotel elevate itself above being a mere resort. She might not have a rainforest to tempt guests to Saltpond, but she had the ocean, the culture and the personal touch.

Whether Atu intended to get involved or not shouldn’t matter. In fact, he could stay in Kuala Lumpur for as long as he pleased.

After a dip in her pool, and a rinse-off under the rainforest shower in her suite, she placed a call to Irfan. The manager was there in minutes to escort her to breakfast before commencing an extensive tour of the grounds. He didn’t volunteer Atu’s whereabouts and she praised herself for not asking.

Still, she kicked herself when, a few minutes after she’d returned to the villa after a day spent exploring, her heart jumped when the phone on her bedside table rang.

‘Hello. Did you miss me?’

His voice was a dark rasp that sent delicious unwanted shivers over her skin.

The sensation made her strike an offhand reply. ‘Not at all. In fact, it’s been a relief not to have you breathing down my neck.’

‘And in amongst that relief did you enjoy yourself?’

She bit her lip. Answering yes would play into his hands. Answering no would be a lie. ‘I need more than a day to make up my mind one way or another.’

‘Of course you do. A word of caution, though. The careful approach doesn’t win you any accolades.’

‘What’s that supposed to mean?’

‘It means that every once in a while you need to be bold. Take what you want and to hell with everyone else.’

‘Is that the way you operate?’

‘Of course. Why else would I be so wildly successful?’ he queried, with a devilish mockery which should have horrified her and yet aroused something in her that had gone dormant since his short absence.

The unnerving feeling escalated, making her shift in her chair. ‘Was there a particular reason you called?’

He waited a beat, as if to let her pulse race faster for no other reason than waiting for him to speak. ‘I called to let you know I’ll be held up for another night.
