Back at the station, Dontay was answering a call and Boone was interrogating his sergeant, who, once again, approved yet another sick leave.
âAnd what did you say?â Boone asked his second-in-command, as he stood beside Sargeâs desk.
âI told him I hope he feels better,â Sarge said.
âYou hope he feels better?â Boone responded angrily. âAre you out of your mind? You tell him to get his skinny ass in here and get in here now! Weâre already undermanned. Having a stomach ache is no excuse for not bringing your ass to work.â
âPeople get sick, Chief.â
âSo what? Looking at the lot of you make me sick every day.â His men laughed. âBut I come to work. I do my job. You call him back and tell him either he get his ass into this station or donât bother to show his face around here ever again!â
Dontay hung up the phone at his desk, grabbed the manifest writeup and hurried to Sargeâs desk.
âI canât tell him that, Chief,â Sarge said.
Boone looked at him as if he was nuts defying him.
âWhat I mean is,â Sarge said, realizing he might have overstepped his bounds, âwe donât wanna lose him. Heâs a good cop.â
âHeâs an average cop still on probation. Call him,â Boone ordered.
Dontay handed Sarge the manifest. âWhatâs the call?â Sarge asked him.
âCar wreck,â Dontay responded. âOne car accident from the reports Iâm getting. That new dean was the driver.â
Boone was about to continue his argument with Sarge, when he heard what Dontay said. He looked at Dontay. âThe new dean?â
Dontay nodded. âYes, sir. They say she was the driver.â
Booneâs heart began to squeeze. âIs she alright?â
It was an odd question to Dontay. He didnât even ask the uniforms on scene. âI donât know, sir. I didnât think to--â
âWhere did it happen?â
âOn Bassett Road, over by the Granger Farm. Iâm heading over there right now.â
âIâll take it,â Boone said, moving away from Sargeâs desk. âYou get back to work.â And then Boone began walking hurriedly, and then he began running, out of the squad room.
Dontay, shocked, looked at Sarge. The chief had never taken a car wreck call before.
Sarge shook his head. âDonât look at me. I ainât never seen nothing like it,â he said, âand I been working for that man a very long time.â
