CHAPTER 14

THEY BOTH TURNED TO me as if realizing I was still there. My head swirled with confusion; my heart hurt from beating so hard. The chills that ran through me didn’t affect me anymore. I was completely cold. Numb. Who was I?

“Amelia—” Tienne started, and I raised a hand to stop him.

Avieles continued, “It’s fine. It’s ok.”

I laughed.

“At least now we know, and you can work on perfecting the spell for her humanity.”

Pure humanity.

Tienne ignored him. “Amelia, listen to me.” His amber eyes bore into mine. Eyes that should’ve been mine. I would never have crystal eyes. I will never have powers.

“Breathe,” he said.

I will never adjust to the air. Rulin… He would hate me forever.

“Please breathe.”

I was losing myself.

“Don’t go.” He stood on the edge of the pentagram now. Leaning in as if he wanted to reach me. Avieles stayed behind him. Panic in his eyes.

“Why?” I felt the spell lessening. My body pulled me back. I was done here.

“There is still much we can do. You aren’t alone.”

I smiled. I am alone. I blinked and felt myself disappear. Just as before, I saw them longer than they saw me. I saw the fury in Tienne’s eyes before he turned to Avieles.

“A spell for humanity,” he spat at him. Even though he was half a head shorter, I could see Avieles shrinking as Tienne’s rage let him grow. “There was nothing in that thick head of yours that you could’ve said to comfort her.”

Avieles kept quiet as Tienne went off on him. I continued to disappear and even though I could see them, I could see a flame, too. The flame I shied away from. The flame that could’ve ended my suffering. With time, the summon to follow grew stronger as I disappeared. To my cold dungeon. In a magical castle on magical land. Human. I wished for the flame to welcome me instead.
