Transplant

Sometimes when I’m talking with my sister, tilling the soil of our shared memories of immigration and its aftermath, I’ll sink into the dense dry darkness and remember how inhospitable this land was for us when we were abruptly uprooted and transplanted from afar.

I’ll remember how little air or water there was and how long it took to grow roots.

I’ll remember how sometimes we fought each other like weeds competing for the sun’s light and warmth.

I’ll feel envious of the roses, those tall, coveted blooms with their thorns that prick so easily yet are always forgiven their sharpness, unlike us thistles, resilient yet expendable.

Then I will remember that being a transplant means growing between what was before and what’s to come.

That I will leave fertile soil behind in what was fallow ground.

That each new seed coming will be fed by what we shed.
