Daniel saw that I was fed, commenting that it wouldnât do to starve myself for Samuelâs sake. When I parted ways with the other Charlotte brothers I walked back to the doctorâs office. I could hear the shouting even before I opened the door.
âThe hell do you even care for?â The voice was Samuelâs, though froggy and raw.
I opened the door, peering down the hallway which bisected the building from the front door to the back. The parlor to my right served as the doctorâs office. Rooms running down the left side served as examination and operating rooms.
âI care because I care, you damnable stubborn ox.â And that was certainly Maddyâs voice. The shouting match was coming from Samuelâs room.
I crept there, glancing in the parlor as I passedâapparently Doctor Thackery had stepped out. A mirror opposite the door to Samuelâs room revealed the truth. They were shouting, but they were closeâterribly close. He had her gripped by the cloth of her shoulder and her arms were placed to either side of his neck where he reclined in bed.
âYouâre just here for the gold,â I heard him say in a dangerously low voice.
She sniffed indignantly, pulling away from him. âThatâs a filthy accusation. Iâm here because the cards said I would be here.â
âFate.â Samuel snorted. âRight. Get out.â
âI will!â
âAnd donât come back!â
She drew herself upright, taking the bearing of a queen. âMister Clayton, if my presence is a thorn in your comfort I will be sure to make myself known to you every last day you draw breath.â
As I neared the open door to the room Maddy came bustling out, skirts hiked up and out of her way. Her face was flustered and her hair out of place. And I noticed the first three buttons of her dressâ high neck were unfastened.
She stopped when she saw me, a fresh red flush coming to her face. Fastening her buttons she stammered for a moment. Finally gathering her composure, Maddy caressed my cheek fondly and said, âYouâve the patience of all the saints for putting up with thatâ¦that man.â
I lost my voice at the touch, fumbling for a brief moment. Again she smiled for me and excused herself out of the office. She slammed the door for good measure, hard enough to cause the trim windows on either side of it to rattle in their casings.
