Working with bleeding fingers and cramping muscles, Keva freed the yearlings one by one. None abandoned the group. Even when the last yearling stepped from its ropes, the yearlings remained clustered under the trees, gazing at Keva from solemn eyes. She tried to imagine what they were thinking. She looked around uncertainly. It was not far to the edge of the forest. But Allindra was approaching the horizon and Zan followed. Soon it would be dark. Dark until dawn. And Waana had said that most predators did not venture far into the trees. Better to pass the dark hours deep in the trees than exposed where there was less protection.
