Should she tell him? Should she tell him she knew who’d tampered with his memories and implanted information into his head? But then he’d expect her to explain how she knew and who she was.

The truth would complicate matters exponentially, and the issues at hand were too important for her silly conscience to interfere. Her priority had to be Kuma Jabol in jail and ascertaining the gnomes’ experiments wouldn’t blow up in anyone else’s faces. Felvyn might not have known how their gadgets were connected to the disaster, but it was clear that they were.

“Come on.” She dragged Neil by the hand through the folks meandering out of the council room. Voices called out to them to express sentiments of various sorts, plus some wolf whistles, and she rushed him out the door as if in need of a physical celebration of the verdict.

While she wouldn’t hate a physical celebration with Neil, there was no time. Memory spells either wore off with the right stimulus or lasted forever. They could affect a larger area than desired, if the spellcaster was sloppy. The mental coaxing she’d conducted on most of the council members had been manipulation of a surgical, more delicate kind.

The Pirate King had not been careful with her dragon. He’d also, she deduced, prevented her from locating Kuma for reasons other than the urgency of the embassy project. Yet he’d claimed he couldn’t risk favoritism. At this point her suspicions inspired her to something approaching treason.

Considering that Neil had just requested official protection from Victoria, weren’t they a pair?

“Where are we going?” Neil asked, more than able to keep up with her.

“My car.” Downtown was crowded today, a balmy ninety-four degrees Fahrenheit instead of over a hundred, so shoppers were taking advantage. “Then the portal to travel to Tarakona. Since Rocky’s in the council chamber, we have a good shot of bypassing the wards before he catches us.”

He skidded to a halt. Because their hands stayed clasped, she swung around him like a lasso. He stared fixedly somewhere to the left of her head. “We need to stay here two weeks. You need to stay with me, Zuri. It’s important that you stay here.”

“Is that so?” A curious shift in emphasis—that she was the one the Pirate King wished to detain in Magic. She’d never have suspected someone would approach Neil to change her plans. Very clever. If she hadn’t found the control globe, she’d have accepted the extension of her time here with both irritation and joy, and they wouldn’t be headed for the portal. “Why?”

“I wish to…” Neil frowned. The nigh indiscernible haze in his eyes disappeared. “I want you to stay with me. I intended to ask you to come visit me when I left.”

“Oh.”

Control globes couldn’t change emotions. That was the real Neil talking. The real Neil then placed his hands on either side of her face, bent, and kissed her. It was so sweet, so natural, that she had to kiss him back for about ten minutes.
