Vargr

“I knew who you were when I arrived. I didn’t want you dead, but I wasn’t willing to help you until I knew your character. Just because you are the chosen one doesn’t mean that I chose you,” she said. “But in case you’re wondering, you passed the test. Your heart is strong.”

“Thank you,” I said. I didn’t know what else to say. She was right; just because I was queen didn’t mean I was worth following. I had to earn that right. The Vargr ran for miles as we continued to talk.

“After living here for so long, I’ve grown a bit cynical,” she said.

“How long have you lived down here?”

“I was banished here a long time ago; my people all think me dead,” she said. “I’ve lived down here for over five centuries.”

“What is Vargr? Is he a wolf?”

“An ancient wolf of gods,” she said. “His purpose was to expose liars to the Elder Gods. Old Mother created us all with different purposes.”

I nodded. I was created to love. That was my true purpose. I had always been that way. I loved the children of Dunmanas Bay, I loved my pack, I loved my friends in Maine, and I loved all those trapped in the Realms. My purpose was to protect them all.

“Do you know Conrad?”

“Who?”

“Ummm . . . Conrad,” I said. How could I describe him? “A strange little man who lives in a Victorian house on wheels in the city Stonearch.”

“Ah, the map keeper. I know him,” she said.

“Is he well? Have you seen him recently?”

“Of recent, he doesn’t leave his house. I heard he was flayed for his insolence to the Dvergar. Others say he inflicted the wounds on himself, but everyone agrees he’s insane,” she said.

I knew the wounds she spoke of; Dilara and I had given them to him when he agreed to give me his skin with the tattooed map of the Bloodrealms. With his permission, Dilara had sliced the skin off his back to help us escape. Now we were both back. I hoped to save him this time and that coming back wasn’t a disgrace to him after he’d done so much to help me get out. I wanted to show him what life outside the Realms could be. I wanted to show him and Jutta the sunshine.

Love was sunshine, pure and warm and inspiring to all.

I wondered if Jutta had ever seen the sun or if she had always lived her life in the shadows and cracks of the Realms. It was a hard realization that no matter how bad we had it, someone else might have it worse. Compassion and kindness were the only weapons against pain and suffering.

As we neared the edge of the labyrinth, I felt a rush of relief. I held my hand over my pounding heart. I’d have been lost without Hyrrokkin.

“Thank you so much,” I said. “Truly, thank you.”

“Don’t thank me just yet,” she said. Her voice was cold as ice as she pulled daggers from sheathes at her thighs.
