Everything appeared normal, well at least on the outside. The streets were quiet, no one was screaming, and thank God…not one police car. Zack took the stairs up to his apartment where the sounds of the late, great Marvin Gaye drifted and embellished the hallways of the Fairfield Southside Tenants. He opened his door and was more than just surprised; he was shocked.

Two young men who looked to be in their teens sat mercifully under Sleepy’s watch. Zack didn’t know their ages, but he could still see the innocence in them.

“What we got here?” Zack asked.

Neither one of the boys spoke, and he didn’t think it was because they were ignoring him. They were just scared. Well, who wouldn’t be with Sleepy and Kman mean mugging with pistols on the couch.

Zack reached for the paper lying on the table and read with amusement.

I will respect my elders, repeated. The message was clear, but the delivery could use improvement.

Zack turned to Kman first. “Really? I would expect this much out of him,” he said, pointing at Sleepy. “But you, K? Put away the pieces.”

Sleepy stood. “Wait, wait, wait,” he said. “Hear me out. This was the easy way—the easy button. You know what these two fools did, or tried to do? They tried to rob Miss Jenkins. Snatched her purse, and when she wouldn’t let go, they commenced to beating her, and then when she still didn’t let go, these little motherfuckers pulled a gun on her.”

Zack turned to Kman for his account.

Kman handed Zack the gun. “All true, Zack. I mean I didn’t see it, but Miss Jenkins, well you know has a way of making herself known, and we did hear the commotion. Sleepy got there first, and it took everything in me and Miss Jenkins to talk him down. Of course, they,” he said, pointing at the boys on the floor, “they didn’t help much. Got way too much mouth and get this, they don’t know nothing about using a gun, not even how to load one.”

“Yeah, Z, these fools don’t know nothing about no guns. Stupid asses had the clip in backwards.” Sleepy laughed. “Man, I wanted to whup their little asses. But, I didn’t. See no bruises, nothing, but they are gonna be washing some cars and helping Miss Jenkins, Willie, whoever needs it. That’s what we agreed on, right, Omar and Shemar?”

The two boys nodded in unison. Zack could see the track of tears that stained the boy’s face, a clear mark of guilt and shame. He was once again looking into the eyes of his past, like revisiting old ghosts. Two years ago, he didn’t save Jamel, though he tried—that loss would stay with him. There was a lot to be said about young black boys, but as of late, none of it was good.

“Omar, Shemar, you do know we are gonna hold you to this,” Zack said, “and if you don’t, one of three things can happen. One, you can go to jail for a very long time, charged with armed robbery and gun possession.
