Chapter Nineteen

Six Months Later

I got my wish about the dreams. No more came to haunt me. Only that one same prophecy, over and over again. Boring really. The end of the world is nigh. Run screaming from the banshee, people.

Ugh. My morning sickness phase disappeared within a few months, at least. Replaced by hair-trigger horniness, which is much preferable in general and it’s something my mates certainly haven’t complained about.

Sebastian’s been obsessed with tracking down clues from the past that might help us. Some nights I have to actually switch his laptop off and take it away from him.

Theo’s started using his calming touch to help him sleep. He’s too restless to stay in bed otherwise.

Fergus has been a little quiet when he’s been back from college. He’s home every other weekend, and barely leaves my side the entire time. Nothing to worry about, he always reassures me. He’s just twisted up about the banshee. He can’t help feeling responsible for digging up what turned out to be his mother’s body. A confession he made recently that I realized I shared. I reminded him that she would have risen anyway. Despite the fact that Sebastian’s theory about how quickly she can rise when temporary bodies are buried is still only a theory, all of us are certain he’s right. There’s no evidence that her spirit has risen again since Portia was buried, but why would it? She’s already powerful enough to resurrect. She doesn’t need to claim another temporary body.

Lukas is the same as ever, always deep in thought and pouting his face off. Always ready to steal me away from the others at every possible opportunity. He makes the effort to steer conversations on to the baby and the future whenever he can see me freaking out.

The fact that we’ve made zero progress on our plan, and that the day of the resurrection is inching ever closer doesn’t get past any of us.

Theo has been baking a little more than usual, feeling the need to keep himself busy, I think. I’ll never complain about how much he makes, but the time I walked into the kitchen and couldn’t see a square inch of surface on any counter or table was taking it a little too far. I’d distracted him with sexy talk that afternoon, and he didn’t let me leave the bedroom for the rest of the day. I think when he went back into the kitchen later and brought us up snacks, he realized he’d been going crazy. He slowed down a little after that.

Now, the five of us are just waiting.

I know something needs to happen to get us to that beach.

It’s not like we were planning on taking a vacation, and I haven’t been able to find a beach that looks like the right one on Google street view.

It’s like a puzzle with a missing piece. None of us have been able to find it.

The pack and all kinds of supernatural communities and councils have been coming up with their own contingencies and keeping us in the loop, kind of.
