I sat at a little table in the hospital reception area and waited for news about Jack. If he died, then it would be the first time I had ever lost a client. I can tell you now that this sort of thing has happened to me only a couple of times since and no matter how often it happens it always puts me in a shitty mood. A lot of the time I just want to do bad things to the people involved. However, the better half of me always keeps the destructive revenge half in check.
Jack had no idea what he was getting into. Neither did I, for that matter. The last couple of days had me thinking that perhaps we stumbled into something we had no business messing with. If we were really after United Pharma we were in over our heads. Jack was simply trying to catch a possible thief, and now he's in intensive care missing parts of his body and most likely counting his final moments. It's a shitty way to go.
The coffee I was drinking was bad and watching Val head in my direction reminded me of it. I hadn't realized I had been staring into it until Val walked over and tapped me on the shoulder. I saw her coming, but for some reason, it didn't register. She looked at me with the look she usually gives me when something bad happens and there isn't anything we can do about it.
In a calm voice, she said, "Come with me."
I downed what little java I had left and followed. We walked out of the hospital and to her car where she motioned me to get in. I gave her a quizzical look, then got in.
She got in on the driver's side and leaned her seat back. "The doctors say by some miracle Mr. Hamilton is going to make it. We have him on 24-hour surveillance with specific orders to not allow anyone into the room who isn't approved by Franklin. Let's hope it'll be enough."
I nodded.
"Mike, what happened? In the last 24 hours we have five dead bodies and three assassination attempts with no real answers. Franklin is asking questions, but no one is talking."
"I'm not sure myself, Val. As I told Franklin, Jack hired me to look into something and I did. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a bit more than we were expecting. The thing is, we don't even know what we've stumbled upon. I can't really say anything more than that since I don't know myself."
She looked at me incredulously. "Don't give me that, Mike. You forget that I'm a detective, too. There's something you're not telling me. I'm not going to believe that you unknowingly smacked the hornet's nest and have no idea why they're upset."
Of course, she was right. I wasn't ready to throw in the United Pharma angle, especially without more proof. All we had now was theory and I wasn't about to go down that road until I knew more.
