Connor

After the game, I was still reeling from Coach Reno calling me out for flirting with Allie. As I made my way out of the locker room, I was worried about how I’d handle the fallout. I mean, crap, my actual girlfriend hadn’t even been fifteen yards away. No way Kayla had missed what Coach had said.

It had taken all my willpower not to look in Kayla’s direction. We’d been winning, but only by a narrow margin. I couldn’t afford to lose focus because I had been flirting with Allie. And Kayla was going to be smoking mad about it.

Scanning the parking lot, I spotted her leaning against the tailgate of my truck, arms folded, leg bouncing as her foot tapped against the asphalt. As much as I did not want to deal with her, I accepted my fate and headed toward my truck anyway.

“Good game tonight, man,” JJ called from behind me.

I stopped to wait for him to catch up. “You, too, man.”

“I can’t believe coach called you out like that, dude. He knows you and Allie are buds.” JJ shot me a sympathetic look. He knew exactly what Coach’s razzing would cost me with my girlfriend.

“I’m totally in for it, man.” I tipped my head toward my truck, widening my eyes. JJ glanced over and winced.

“Dude, just make sure she’s all right.” JJ gestured behind me. “You aren’t the only one who cares about her.”

Confused, I glanced over my shoulder. My heart sunk to my stomach. Allie. My best friend, the one person I loved more than anyone, sat hunched on the curb in front of the school. What was she doing there?

“Later, man,” I called to JJ as I course corrected toward Allie.

“Allie, what are you doing? Where’s your mom?” I dropped my bag at her hip and crouched in front of her.

“I forgot she had a girl’s night out with some of the daycare moms tonight.” She avoided my gaze. “Don’t worry, Connor. I was just getting ready to call her. She said she’d be home around now.”

“Why didn’t you tell me you needed a ride?” Allie knew the rules. I would drop whatever I was doing to make sure she got home.

“I didn’t, um—” Her eyes darted toward the parking lot.

Right. Kayla. Allie didn’t want to get me in any more trouble. I sighed, raking my hands through my hair. Kayla might be my girlfriend, but Allie came first, even if it made me a jerk of a boyfriend.

“Don’t worry about her. Come on. I’ll take you home.” I grabbed her hand and pulled her up.

“No, Connor, it’s okay. I can—”

“Are you serious right now?” The sound of Kayla’s angry voice drew us both up short. Allie tried to pull away. Instead of letting her go, I threaded my fingers through hers, enjoying every second of her hand in mine.

Kayla stormed right up to Allie. “You little bit—”

“Hey!” I stepped in front of Allie, my chest absorbing the jab Kayla intended for her. “Stop! Kayla!”

“You lied! All this time, you lied.
