In vials of ivory and coloured glass

Unstoppered, lurked her strange synthetic perfumes…

Her samba was sensational, and everyone in the room looked at her, but what drew the attention much more than her suggestive moves was her attire. She was wearing a glittering and clingy evening dress that highlighted her buxom figure to the best advantage, a cascade of long black hair fanned out over her shoulders, and her face was covered by a spectacular carnival mask, an elaborate headgear in the form of a gaudy parrot. Her nose was hidden behind a yellow papier-mâché beak, her eyes and brow behind multi-coloured feathered wings that jutted out around her face…

As soon as this creature had appeared on the scene, Esmée had retrieved an eye mask of her own from somewhere on her person and put it over her eyes. Visibly she didn’t want to be seen by this woman. Then Richard, observing this, took off his pilot’s cap at once, and his gold-braided jacket, and hid them on his knees under the table. At once he looked just like a normal bloke in a light blue shirt with a dark blue tie. Only Daisy was still a bit conspicuous with her dark glasses, but it couldn’t be helped. To most people, anyway, the blind all look alike and one averts one’s eyes from them…

“Do you know that lady?” Richard asked under his breath.

“Yes. That’s the madam who took me away to London! Don’t ask me how I can be so sure, but somehow I recognize her…”

“Maybe it’s her perfume,” Daisy whispered, “when she passed by I couldn’t help noticing a strange and heady whiff: I’ve never smelled anything like it before!”

“At any rate, I don’t want her to recognize me. Let’s get out of here as discretely as we can.”

And because they had just paid, they could get up and walk out without further ado. As they left the club, Richard glanced back over his shoulder and saw the parrot woman dancing in the middle of the podium among the children and the palm fronds. She seemed right at home in the safari décor and was getting on with the children just fine; they were eager to demonstrate their moves to her; she smiled broadly at them—her mouth just visible under the bird’s beak—and they were all enjoying themselves.

As soon as they emerged from the club, Esmée exclaimed, “When you talk about the Devil!”

“Who is this woman?”

“Is she really the one who took you to London seven years ago?”

“Yes, yes. Her name is Rita Brazzle and she’s half-British, half-Brazilian. Damian was able to confirm her identity. We always called her Miss Rita.”

“And what is she doing here? Acquiring babies?” Daisy wanted to know.

“Well, if she is here, there’s no doubt she’s picking up some more children, yes.”

“But isn’t it exactly what Damian and you were hoping for, though? To spot some familiar faces?”

“Yes, but I had no idea that Miss Rita herself was still involved after all these years. She seems to be involved directly, too!”

“And so brazenly!” Richard remarked.
