“You’re still adjusting.”

“Yes.” The wine arrived and Courtney took a long sip. “It’s like the landscape has changed. It’s like I’m a bit lost.”

“Which explains why you were acting like a drunken sex-starved maniac at the bar that night.”

Courtney couldn’t help but laugh. “No, I was a drunken sex-starved maniac that night. I wasn’t just acting like one. I was being stupid.”

Ellen laughed too. “So you’re not a stupid sex-starved maniac now, right?”

“Oh, God, no. I couldn’t keep up with that pace of life. I’m not exactly twenty years old anymore, and besides, it’s not who I am anyway. I think I…went a little crazy for a while.”

After they ordered—Ellen penne-a-la-vodka and Courtney bruschetta and a side salad—Courtney explained how’d she quit her job after the crash, sold everything and hit the open road. She explained how free, how unencumbered it felt for a while. “But it catches up to you no matter how hard you try to outrun it. That’s the part I wasn’t figuring on.”

“So what are you doing, taking things a day at a time?”

“Yes. An hour at a time if necessary. I was at a library this morning checking out books on surviving traumatic things and stuff. The book I bought yesterday when I was with you? It’s about PTSD. I’ve started reading about it. At least I figure that’s the first step in doing something positive.”

Ellen nodded with more than a passing curiosity. She listened intently. A little too intently. Ellen was a kindred spirit.

“Ellen, you know something about coming out of the dark, don’t you?” She’d dropped enough hints about a failed relationship, and she’d said herself she hadn’t been in a very good place the last few months.

Their food arrived and they silently tucked into it for a while, Courtney’s earlier question still unanswered. She knew Ellen would answer in her own good time, and she did.

“I guess I’m finally finding my way out of the dark too.” Ellen talked about her thirteen-year relationship with a woman named Susan and about Susan’s betrayal. She spoke in a formal way that was totally devoid of emotion. It was like she was reading a news story out loud, and Courtney could understand that. Sometimes the only way to express something hurtful was to strip all of the emotion out of it. Both of them had merely laid out the foundation and framework of what their lives had been like the last little while. With luck, there would be time to fill it in later with one another.

After dinner and dessert coffees, they rode the Indian back to the city. At a stoplight, Courtney asked Ellen if she was ready to go back to Sam’s.

“Not especially.”

“Okay.” The reason didn’t matter. Courtney wasn’t ready for the night to end either. She steered the bike in the direction of her hotel.

It had to be an expensive suite, maybe close to three-hundred dollars a night, Ellen figured. The bedroom and living room were separate, there was a small kitchenette and two bathrooms.
