I had caught the bus straight from Auntie Teelaâs to the meeting. I gathered Camille, Angel, and Alexis around so that I could fill them in on the details about my father.
âSo if heâs just right down the road in La Marque or Galveston, then we just go there and find him. Itâs not like heâs far away,â Camille said matter-of-factly.
I sighed. âYeah, but what do you expect me to do? I canât just show up at the next school board meeting and say, âIâd like to add an item to the agendaâHey Mr. Superintendent, Iâm your long-lost daughter. Where have you been all my life?ââ
âI donât know about that, but whatâs the point in knowing exactly where he is if weâre not going to do anything about it?â Alexis questioned. âEven though he works my nerves, I canât even think about life without my father. And if something prevented us from being together and I found out he was somewhere, girl, wild horses wouldnât keep me away.â
I decided to say what was really on my mind. âI just canât believe heâs been less than an hour away and he has never even tried to contact me. Maybe I should just leave well enough alone,â I said, defeated.
Angel, who had been quiet most of the time, finally spoke. âI think you should go meet him, hear what he has to say. Then decide after that if you need to ever be bothered with him again.â
âWeâll go with you,â Alexis said. She looked around at the other girls. âMy cousin is a private investigator, so Iâll have him do a little digging first, check to see if heâs in Galveston or La Marque. Then weâll see if itâs even possible for him to be your father.â
âYour cousin could find all of that out?â I asked.
âGirl, please. My cousin is the best in the business. If thereâs dirt to be found, heâll find it. Then weâll see which night they have their school board meeting on. Weâll make sure weâre there early to catch him before he goes in. If not, we can stay late if we have to,â she said.
I stared at my friends. They were serious as a heart attack. It was amazing how close weâd grown over the last year, especially because we were all so different. I couldnât help but smile.
âItâs great knowing yâall got my back,â I said.
âAlways,â Camille said.
âThatâs what friends are for,â Alexis sang.
We all playfully groaned. âPlease, do not break out into the Dionne Warwick song,â Camille said.
âIâm mad that you even know who sings that song,â I told Camille.
We laughed until Rachel came in and started the meeting.
