Shoved into Augustus’s office, I catch myself before I fall flat on my ass and stumble into the bookshelves instead. Jefferson snorts, offering me a wave before slamming the door shut.

He wouldn’t even let me leave a note for Hudson, so I’m gonna get my ass kicked later on for the whole vanishing act. Great.

“Your shirt is on backwards.”

Whirling around, I find Logan in his corner. “Your buddy gave me ten seconds to get dressed before he threatened the cuffs, so excuse me if my outfit isn’t perfect.”

“Why were you naked in front of Jefferson?”

Glaring at him, I quickly shove my arms back through the t-shirt and right myself, muttering obscenities under my breath.

“He doesn’t understand the meaning of a locked door.”

Logan chuckles, averting his eyes to give me some semblance of privacy while I adjust myself. When I’m done, I glance around Augustus’s office and find it more dishevelled than usual.

The mahogany desk is stacked with several newspapers and piles of unorganised notes, cluttering the polished surface. With a quick glance at the door, I sneak over and grab the first paper, scanning over the headlines.

Unbelievable.

They have tied the whole story up in neat little bows. Stephanie, unstable and high, made up a story to target one of the most powerful families in the country. With her plan quickly unravelling, she took her own life in a drug-fuelled rage.

According to the papers, the esteemed Knight family emerged unharmed and stronger than ever, vowing to stand by their innocent little lamb and adoptive son.

Fucking hell.

I think I’m going to puke.

“There’s not even a mention of what Hudson did in here,” I hiss, rereading the article. “Kade’s father has twisted the whole narrative to fit him and benefit his career. Hell, this probably just won him the next election. Goddammit.”

“Money weaves many a web of lies, kiddo.”

“I thought we discussed the nickname, motherfucker.”

He smirks. “What? I like it.”

“And I’d like you to fuck off.”

Tossing the newspaper aside, I take my usual seat. Augustus will be over the moon, this entire fiasco is one giant advertisement for Blackwood. He’ll have new patients pouring out of his gold-plated asshole, begging for a plea deal to reduce their sentence.

Logan watches over me from the corner as we wait for Augustus, his familiar presence offering a crumb of comfort. When the evil bastard himself arrives, the door crashing shut with fury, I can’t help but flinch.

Augustus removes his luxurious wool coat and scarf, running a hand over his slicked back hair. He spots me and glares.

“You missed our session, Miss West.”

“Yeah… something came up.”

“Rolling around in bed with your convict boyfriend is not an adequate excuse to skip our time together. Or have you forgotten the deal? I’m happy to refresh your memory if needed, bring one of them down here for a live demonstration.”

I keep my gaze averted. “That won’t be necessary.
