JUAN MIGUEL AND Blackwelder made the short trip from the Deck to I-Dome, where the civilian staff’s living quarters were located. Fort Felix actually employed several non-military Allied Earth citizens, including IT specialists, technicians, medical staff, and the majority of the workers in the commons. They walked down the long hall off the main entrance, lined with doors leading to individual living spaces not much bigger than a college dorm room. At the end of the hall, they turned a corner that led to a small alcove with a single door. It was marked C01 and had the letters JMA displayed above the call box. Juan Miguel waved his hand in front of the sensor on the call box, and the door slid open.

“This may have escaped your notice,” Blackwelder said as he entered, “but these aren’t my quarters.”

“No? Well, I suppose we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.” He walked over to a cabinet and started to riffle through it.

Juan Miguel’s quarters were large by dormitory standards; not obnoxiously so, but it was a significant amount of space for one person. The door opened on an antechamber that led to the living room, straight ahead, or a dining area to the right that could comfortably seat four. To the left was a small nook that Juan Miguel had set up as a secondary office space. In the living room, there was a couch shaped like a U that touched the wall on three sides and opened on a large coffee table. A massive screen adorned the nearby wall. On the wall across from the screen hung a large flag with two stripes—one dark blue and one yellow—and a seal in the middle that consisted of two red-bladed swords with a golden crown between them, and the letter S floating just above the crown, all suspended in a white circle. Blackwelder had learned way back in basic training that it represented one of the thirteen regions of the Allied Earth government, but he couldn’t remember exactly which one.

Juan Miguel reappeared with some medical supplies. “Have a seat. Let’s get you cleaned up.”

Blackwelder sat on the couch, and Juan Miguel sat down very close to him. After he poured some solution onto a rag, Juan Miguel dabbed Blackwelder’s lip, which was bleeding from his fight.

“I still can’t believe that you did that,” Juan Miguel said.

“Greene deserves worse.” He held perfectly still as Juan Miguel carefully cleaned his wound. “It was his job to watch out for us. If he’d been monitoring us, things never would have gotten so out of hand. I’m not exaggerating when I say we could have died in there. I almost did.”

“I know,” Juan Miguel said solemnly. “Here.”

Juan Miguel handed Blackwelder a cold compress to hold against his cheek, where dark purple bands had formed. The cold stung his skin at first, but his face immediately began to feel better. As he held the compress, his attention fell on the flag again.

“Do you recognize it?” Juan Miguel asked.
