Chapter Nine

Lara hurried to the window, gazing out as she stood next to Gage. Fire billowed into the sky. Smoke painted a gray streak across the night sky.

“What the hell?” Mac said. His feet thumped against the floor until he was right behind them.

“It looks to be a couple blocks away,” Gage said, never taking his eyes from the window.

“The World Alliance did this. They set off a bomb in the city,” Lara said, tilting her head to the side. They’d done this before from what she remembered. She’d seen it in a mission report she was told to study. It was one of their tactics.

“In their city?” Mac asked. “Why would they harm their own people?”

She was privy to some sensitive information thanks to the lovely chip in her head. They must have never thought she’d turn against them.

“To make the resistance look bad.” Lara shook her head. “That’s who they’ll blame it on. Dictator Murdock will make a TV announcement with alleged indisputable evidence against the rebellion. It makes the rebellion the enemy in the people’s eyes, especially when the World Alliance guards swoop in to save everyone. It’s how they keep their citizens from turning to the rebellion. There’s unrest. People who think they are being treated unfairly. This is their way of keeping them quiet. Showing them that there is nowhere else for them to go. That the Rebellion doesn’t care about them.”

“Those bastards,” Mac said beneath his breath.

She agreed. It took a lot to kill your own people. If the World Alliance was willing to go to these lengths, it was safe to say there wasn’t anything they wouldn’t do.

Sirens sounded and a voice echoed over a loud speaker.

“Please evacuate the area immediately. Police are standing by to aid in the evacuation. Please proceed in a calm and orderly fashion.”

The computerized voice was cut off by another loud explosion. It was so close the floor rattled beneath her feet. Flames leaped into the air, lighting the sky in a fiery orange.

“It’s a full blown attack. We should leave,” Gage said. “Before we’re escorted out and have to leave our cargo behind.”

Mac peeked out the window again before drawing the curtain shut. “Agreed. Gather your things and let’s go.”

Lara waited by the window as the others got their things. She looked through the crack between the curtains, watching as fire and smoke streaked across the night. It looked like a war zone out there. If only the citizens knew it was their own government that was attacking them.

“I can’t believe they’re bombing their own people,” Minerva said.

“Why?” Gage said. “They murdered millions with the flu they released fifteen years ago.”

Mac opened the door and ushered them all outside. “Let’s go.”

They walked through the parking lot toward the car. Minerva opened her door and set her bag inside. As they were about to get in, a police cruiser pulled up, blocking the exit to the road. An officer climbed out with a megaphone in hand.

“Please proceed to Carson Street.
