In the days leading up to Christmas, Selene played the role of a recluse. The library closed early and she stayed home, holed up with books, fatty snacks, and Yukie. Her phone she buried under pillows or forgot in unused rooms on the third floor. Aiden called and texted, but she never answered. It was the first time she had ever ghosted someone.

“So this is what it feels like to be the ghoster, not the ghostee,” she said as she relaxed on the ledge of the living room bay window and flipped to the next page of her book.

Hurting Aiden wasn’t easy, but necessary evils never were. What he chose to do with the knowledge of her identity was up to him. She had let go of it. The matter was out of her hands.

On Christmas Day, Noelle convinced her to come over for Bibi’s cooking. Tired of peanut butter banana sandwiches and sriracha-drizzled ramen noodles, Selene caved and gave in. She showed up bearing gifts, shoving the wrapped boxes into Noelle’s arms.

“Happy Yule,” she mumbled.

Noelle kicked the front door shut with her leg and unloaded the armful of presents on the console table by the closet. In the kitchen Bibi was toiling away at the stove, two of the four burners boiling giant steel pots. The oven glowed with what looked like a well-seasoned pot roast inside. Bibi was swaying along in her terry cloth robe and fuzzy slippers to the radio on the counter. The old boombox sounded as good as new, blasting a cassette tape of the Supremes singing “Silver Bells.”

“Do you need any help, Bibi?” Selene asked.

Bibi waved her hand and stirred the pot on the back burner. “You girls go chat. Let Auntie Bibi handle all this.”

Selene followed Noelle into her room, plopping down on the corner of her bed. Noelle moved onto her dresser and finger combed her short crop of curls. The uncomfortable silence weighed on Selene and she sighed. Since she’d been a homebody the past few days, she and Noelle had yet to hash out what happened the other night.

“You’re not mad at me, are you?”

“Why would I be?”

“Cut the crap, Noe. You’re pissed I told Aiden.”

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

“No,” said Noelle, fingers dug into her hair roots. She rumpled her curls some more. “If I were mad, I’d tell you.”

“Then why’s there this weird energy?”

“Probably because I’m disappointed.”

Selene’s face fell into her hands. There it was. The D word. It was actually worse than Noelle being angry. Anger she could handle, but Noelle being disappointed was a whole different beast. How could she possibly fix the situation when it was broken enough for Noelle to be disappointed?

“Go ahead,” she said in a defeated tone, “lay into me. Tell me how I fudged up.”

Noelle cut her a vague smile. “Bibi would be pleased you’ve joined the Yule Resolution Club. And, Selly, you already know why I’m disappointed. I’ve told you—this whole thing between you and Aiden is about more than just you now.
