Eleanor Taylor Bland

Eleanor Taylor Bland (1944– ) was born in Boston and married a sailor when she was fourteen; his last station was in the Great Lakes region, where they settled. She graduated from the College of the Lake Country and Southern Illinois University with degrees in accounting and education. She has lived in Waukegan, Illinois, since 1972, working as an accountant until 1999.

With her first book, Dead Time (1992), Bland introduced Marti MacAlister, a smart policewoman who moved from Chicago to a suburb thirty miles away, Lincoln Prairie (a fictional town much like Waukegan), where she teams up with Matthew (Vik) Jessenovik, a decent old-fashioned Polish-American who has some problems with having a female partner, though none with the fact that she is black, in spite of being streetwise and fearless, MacAlister is softhearted, especially with children, whom she regards as among the most helpless members of society. While busy fighting crime, she also goes out of her way to lend a helping hand to other people who have a difficult time helping themselves, like the mentally ill, the homeless, and the elderly. She has had a very long romantic relationship but has not married, nor has she been intimate with her fiancé. There have been eleven novels about MacAlister. Bland also edited the anthology Shades of Black: Crime and Mystery Stories by African-American Authors (2004).

“The Canasta Club” was first published in The World’s Finest Mystery and Crime Stories, edited by Edward Gorman, in 2004.
