Chapter 14

LUNA

I didn't know what this thing was in front of me.

I mean, I knew things were going to be different. I would have been foolish to assume all of Earth's customs would be universal, but to my human eyes?

Meat shouldn't be blue.

"Why are you looking at your meal with concern?" Zhokar asked. He then took a bite of the blue meat without hesitation.

"Uh. I have no idea what it is. On earth, food this color means it's gone bad and should be thrown away."

"This is Bovot. When I asked the ship's chef what the most Terran thing he had, it was this."

"This a blue steak covered with some sort of purple sauce. Is this like, grape gravy or something?"

"Grapes? No. That's Bovot gravy too. Eat up, it's good for you."

"I'm trying to figure out what a Bovot is."

Zhokar sat across the table, hand holding up his head. He seemed to be searching his mind for something to comfort me about my meal. "I think The Dragon Corp tried farming it everywhere with their experiments. They find a planet, they find an animal, if an animal isn't to their taste, they breed something tasty with it."

"The Dragon Corp seems to really like breeding things."

"It's how they show their dominion over the universe. Once they get in control, evolution isn't a natural occurrence. It's controlled by them. If you have some genetic trait they like, they will literally use you as stock and nothing more." He seemed disheartened by that statement. More so than when he usually talked about Dragon Corp's atrocities.

A deep breath. I cut a piece of the meat from the rest of it using this weird fork-knife-spoon hybrid thing. Apparently, the spork wasn't efficient enough. Slowly, I brought it to my mouth, and bit into it, hoping for the best from this strange mystery meat. I chewed it with confusion. Politely doing as my mother said, I finished chewing and swallowing before speaking. "This is, um, steak."

"Yes, it's a steak?" Zhokar replied. "It's obviously a steak. From a bovot."

"This tastes like beef. Like, cows. Bisons. I can't think of other cow-like creatures at the moment." I also wasn't too hot in tenth grade zoology class, really.

Zhokar simply shrugged. "Perhaps the Dragon Corp was already messing with Terra's evolution. Your bison," He said, "is likely some sort of hybrid with a bovot." He chewed another bite. "Honestly, I don't even know where bovots originally came from."

"Well, it's not just like beef. It's a bit sweeter, but it's beef. Blue beef. Okay." I shook my head and kept eating. I would overcome the weirdness of blue food eventually. I peered over to Zhokar. "So, you seemed broken up over the whole guided evolution thing. Are you some sort of naturalist? "

"Luna, I'm so far disconnected from home that I can barely associate with my own culture." He sighed. "You wanted to hear about my story? About Xarak, and what the Dragon Corp did to us?"

I nodded. "You've done so much to me.
