Chapter Eleven
The sound of my phone ringing nonstop woke me from a dead sleep. Pun intended. No, I know I havenât been asleep all day.
Rolling over, I grabbed my phone and checked the time before even seeing who it was. 3:00 p.m. Someone had better be bleeding, or I was going to vamp out on them.
I answered because I was awake now. âHello?â
If I sounded snippy, that was on them. As a human, I hadnât liked middle of the night calls. As a vampire whose nights came during the day, I liked it less.
âHey! Itâs me.â Kendra sounded excited. Oh goody. âIâve located Zara and have been checking in on her all day. Before you ask, yes, I can do that. Anyway, she is holed up in an apartment building on Vine Street.â
She sounded like sheâd drank a few more than normal espressos. âIf we can get there in daylight, we could catch her while sheâs sleeping.â
âGreat, but Iâve given up my daylight walking rights.â At the moment, I was bitter about it.
âIt might be worth asking Jax if it is possible for you to go out.â Seriously, how much caffeine had she had?
âFine.â I growled, low and guttural, then hung up. I already knew the answer, but it really was a good opportunity to catch this rogue.
Yeah. Because talking to Jax was exactly what I wanted to do. Except it wasnât. Of course, it had to be today that we had a hard line on Zaraâs location during daylight hours. I had to be a vampire, so the sunlight was no longer a friend.
Some midlife this was.
I dialed Jaxâs number, staring at the ceiling while I waited for him to answer. Like me, he was sleepingâor shouldâve been, but he answered right away. âHailey? Are you okay?â
The concern in his voice touched me deeper than I was willing to admit. I still didnât know what he meant about feeling obligated to me, and it had nothing to do with being my maker. I really didnât want to think about it too hard.
âI have a line on Zara, a place where sheâs staying right now. But I kind of need to go right now.â In case he was confused, I added, âIn the daylight. Is that possible?â
It probably wasnât. Probably being a vampire was going to cost me my portion of a hundred grand. Just another thing lost to being a creature of the night.
âYeah. Youâll need to wear long sleeves, and gloves.â He paused. âEvery inch of exposed skin has to be covered and shaded. Do you have a wide brimmed hat?â
âI think so.â It wasnât Rose from Titanic wide, but it was fit for a tea at the Kentucky Derby.
âGet ready and Iâll be there to get you shortly.â
I hadnât invited him along, but I couldnât very well refuse the help, either. âFine.â
I hung up and shot a text to Kendra and Luke. Get ready! Itâs on!
A second later my phone pinged.
LUKE: Bitch, please! Iâm already at Kendraâs. You get ready!
I yawned twice because I had become a day sleeper and it was daytime.
