Chapter Eleven

The sound of my phone ringing nonstop woke me from a dead sleep. Pun intended. No, I know I haven’t been asleep all day.

Rolling over, I grabbed my phone and checked the time before even seeing who it was. 3:00 p.m. Someone had better be bleeding, or I was going to vamp out on them.

I answered because I was awake now. “Hello?”

If I sounded snippy, that was on them. As a human, I hadn’t liked middle of the night calls. As a vampire whose nights came during the day, I liked it less.

“Hey! It’s me.” Kendra sounded excited. Oh goody. “I’ve located Zara and have been checking in on her all day. Before you ask, yes, I can do that. Anyway, she is holed up in an apartment building on Vine Street.”

She sounded like she’d drank a few more than normal espressos. “If we can get there in daylight, we could catch her while she’s sleeping.”

“Great, but I’ve given up my daylight walking rights.” At the moment, I was bitter about it.

“It might be worth asking Jax if it is possible for you to go out.” Seriously, how much caffeine had she had?

“Fine.” I growled, low and guttural, then hung up. I already knew the answer, but it really was a good opportunity to catch this rogue.

Yeah. Because talking to Jax was exactly what I wanted to do. Except it wasn’t. Of course, it had to be today that we had a hard line on Zara’s location during daylight hours. I had to be a vampire, so the sunlight was no longer a friend.

Some midlife this was.

I dialed Jax’s number, staring at the ceiling while I waited for him to answer. Like me, he was sleeping—or should’ve been, but he answered right away. “Hailey? Are you okay?”

The concern in his voice touched me deeper than I was willing to admit. I still didn’t know what he meant about feeling obligated to me, and it had nothing to do with being my maker. I really didn’t want to think about it too hard.

“I have a line on Zara, a place where she’s staying right now. But I kind of need to go right now.” In case he was confused, I added, “In the daylight. Is that possible?”

It probably wasn’t. Probably being a vampire was going to cost me my portion of a hundred grand. Just another thing lost to being a creature of the night.

“Yeah. You’ll need to wear long sleeves, and gloves.” He paused. “Every inch of exposed skin has to be covered and shaded. Do you have a wide brimmed hat?”

“I think so.” It wasn’t Rose from Titanic wide, but it was fit for a tea at the Kentucky Derby.

“Get ready and I’ll be there to get you shortly.”

I hadn’t invited him along, but I couldn’t very well refuse the help, either. “Fine.”

I hung up and shot a text to Kendra and Luke. Get ready! It’s on!

A second later my phone pinged.

LUKE: Bitch, please! I’m already at Kendra’s. You get ready!

I yawned twice because I had become a day sleeper and it was daytime.
