The tents were packed, and the fires were extinguished.

Now it was nightfall, but the vampires acted like it was a brand-new day.

Kingsnake mounted his horse then waited for me to mount mine.

I climbed up on the brown mare, wearing the heavy armor he had designed for my slim size.

He stared at me, commanding my gaze.

I looked at him.

“Stay with me at all times.”

He ordered me around like one of his men, and I wanted to resist and shove him off his horse. But after our pillow talk last night, I learned that we needed to get along if we had any hope of tolerating each other.

He pulled on the reins of his horse and took the lead with his general.

I trailed behind them both, the rest of the soldiers in a line behind me. The moonlight reflected off the stalks of grass and leaves in the trees, painting a muted outline of our terrain. Details were difficult to make out, but the path forward was clear.

As we moved farther east, it became colder. I could feel it pierce through the armor and the leather underneath. My gloves weren’t enough to protect my skin from the dry air. I followed behind them, catching a word here and there of their conversation.

Hours passed in silence, and we continued to move farther into the harsh terrain of barrenness. I blindly followed them, unsure if we traveled to mountains or creek beds. When I started to hear crunching underneath the hooves, I knew we’d struck snow.

In front of me, I could see Fang’s outline as he covered Kingsnake, probably staying warm with his body heat.

We finally came to a stop, but it was nowhere near sunrise.

Snow was shoveled out of a clearing, and bonfires were placed in a circle around the perimeter. Tents were erected, as if we would make camp for the rest of the evening. Kingsnake and General Viper continued to confer in private, the two of them inseparable since this journey had started.

My horse was tied up with the others, so I went to Kingsnake’s tent, seeing that Fang was already there, tucked under some blankets on the bed like a dog trying to fight the cold. “The snow is no place for a snake, huh?”

His head lifted slightly, making the sheet slide back on his smooth scales. He slipped his tongue in and out, his yellow eyes showing his agreement.

“I’m not a fan of the cold either.” I wanted to remove my armor, but it was so damn cold I didn’t want to take off a single layer. “I hope we aren’t here for long.”

The flap to the tent opened, and Kingsnake appeared, tall and powerful in his serpent armor. His handsome face constantly wore an angry stare, making his sharp jawline even sharper. He looked perpetually angry, but no amount of rage could dampen his looks. “General Viper and I will be gone for a few hours. I’ll leave Fang here with you.”

“Whoa, what?” I got to my feet. “Where are you going?”

He gave me a hard stare.
