THE BILLIONAIREâS CATCH 22
Chapter 1
She sat up in the tower with her shoulders squared, tracking any movements with the periscope, searching the area, and waiting for anything to happen. She didnât expect anything to occur, but as a lifeguard at a busy California beach, you always had to be ready. Thatâs what she was trained to do.
The lifeguard towers were spaced so that each lifeguard could safely patrol an area. Elisa panned the area with her binoculars. In the distance, she could see some young men paddling around on their boards. Closer to the beach, there were children digging in the sand and making sand castles. Nearby, parents of those children slathered on sunscreen. She wondered how many were not paying attention. Elisa shook her head. When will they ever have respect for the power of Her? Elisa knew firsthand what a strong undercurrent could do to an adult. Children were at the merciful hands of luck and the fast responses from the lifeguards or any willing bystander.
Sheâd just picked up her two-way radio to let others know she needed a bathroom break when out of the corner of her eye she saw someone jumping up and down, waving their arms like a crazy person. Sheâd learned a long time ago that when that happens on a beach, it usually means trouble. She radioed that she could use some help and then grabbed her gear and laddered down the tower. Elisa ran as quickly as she could.
âWhatâs wrong?â Elisa dug her heels into the sand, stopping short of running the man over.
He pointed to an area in the water. âThereâs a man out in the water in trouble.â
Elisa narrowed her eyes and focused. Soon she saw the head bobbing up and down. âDamn, I missed that.â She tore off into the water dropping her pack in the sand.
She reached the man in several strokes and grabbed him under his arms, tilting his head back so he could breathe. She started paddling with her feet, and soon they were both were on the sand. The man was breathing heavily, his eyes wide with terror.
âWhat happened?â Elisa asked.
The man gasped a few times. âMy leg ⦠I got a leg cramp.â He rubbed his calf. âI went to stretch it out, and I got pulled under and took in a big gulp of water.â He turned his head and vomited.
âJust take it easy. Help is on the way. Theyâll get you to the hospital and make sure youâre all right.â Elisa looked up at the crowd that had made a closed circle around them. âEveryone, break it up. Nothing to see here. Go about your business, please.â
The man clutched both sides of his head with his hands. âI was really scared out there. Thank you for rescuing me.â
âYouâre safe now.â Elisa patted him on the shoulder.
The man offered Elisa, a shaky hand. âSergio Underwood.â
âElisa Roberts.â She accepted his hand in hers.
âIâd like to repay you somehow,â he said.
Elisa shook her head rapidly. âNot necessary.
