Chapter Eleven

DAMIEN

“Tevin Campbell,” Jada stated, and I jarred my head back slightly taken aback by her guess.

I dated a lot of women older than me because the dynamic worked. They had already lived their life of family, marriage, and kids and at a point in time, it was something I didn’t want. Hell, I didn't even want to be a stepfather, but the path of my life changed drastically in a matter of days. I wanted that one woman to come home after a long day of work. I looked forward to hearing more about Robux or wiping snotty noses. Now that I got a glimpse of what having a family would look like, and got a feel for it, I didn’t want it any other way or with anyone else. The sense of attachment astounded me, like Jada belonged with me.

To me.

“What do you know about Tevin? You probably weren’t born when the song came out?” I told her.

“When is my birthday?” she asked as if she didn’t believe I knew her age.

“April 20th,” I responded, and she looked at me in shock with her eyes spread wide and her mouth ajar.

“I never told you, my birthday.”

“And you didn’t have to,” I responded.

“How?”

“I can get just about any information I need. Usually, it’s the first thing I do with anyone I come in contact with… but I got sidetracked.”

I stared into Jada’s eyes waiting for discomfort or annoyance because no one really liked the idea of having their whole entire life front and center for someone without their consent. However, Jada only narrowed her pretty eyes at me before she rolled them.

“For your information I was one. And secondly, I know a whole lot because my grandmother used to jam to these oldies.”

“Grandmother? Oldies?” Jada’s choice of words caused me to grimace. “Playing these songs tells you my age.”

“How old are you?” she asked, realizing that we bypassed simple conversations.

Not breaking eye contact, I slowly took a sip of my drink and swallowed. “Thirty-eight.”

Jada twisted her head as she narrowed her eyes. I expected her to make a comment about my age since I was eight years her senior, but she chose to chastise me for my taste in music.

“Well, you definitely had no business jamming to Tevin Campbell under the age of ten.”

I erupted into laughter and bit my lip to hide my smirk.

“Listen, the girls used to love me singing that to them.”

Lines appeared between her brows, displaying her jealousy and I kissed the top of her forehead as I laughed.

“It was before you, Jada.”

“Yeah, wayyyyyyy before me,” she retorted with a heavy eye roll.

“I’m not that old,” I defended myself in laughter.

“Says the man jamming to Tevin Campbell.”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but you were bopping that big old head to the beat.”

Her jaw dropped as she lifted from the crook of my arm to stare at me.

“I have an old soul. I’m certainly not old!”

“You’re right. You don't look old, so I need to see some ID.
