Crazy Joe's House

Adam drove five miles out of town and turned onto a dirt road that led to the dump. After four miles of dust and gravel, he neared the end of the road. He noticed that there were small piles of junk scattered along the left side of the road in the last quarter of a mile. He figured the junk ended up there after people went to the dump and didn’t have enough money to pay the dump fee, or maybe they drove out to the dump only to find it closed. This was the most likely explanation since the dump was only open on Saturdays and Thursdays. People just dumped their stuff as they were driving away from the locked gate.

He slowed his vehicle as he neared the locked gate to the dump at the end of the road and made a left turn on a small dirt road that veered off into the forest. On a pine tree, a faded green street read Skunk Weed Lane. Underneath the street sign was another sign that said, “No Trespassing, Violators Will Be Shot!” The bullet holes in the sign seemed to add extra validity to the warning.

He drove two miles of snaky, unkempt road that had bushes and branches encroaching on the sides of the road. Periodically, Adam’s truck seemed to emit long metallic whines of agony as the branches violated its paint job.

The road ended at a brown log cabin with a green roof. Adam tooted on his horn as he came to a stop, but he left the engine running in case a gun-toting home owner emerged firing at him. He saw the curtains in the front window move as though someone was peeking out. Ten seconds later the front door flew open and a woman emerged onto the porch with hands on her hips that seemed to say, “I’m ready to deal with you!”

Adam looked carefully to see if her hands were resting on six shooters like an old-west gunfighter before he turned off the engine and waved. She responded with an icy stare from hazel-green eyes. Adam felt something strange from her stare, like a surge of electricity had gone through his body. He instantly felt like there was some kind of cosmic chemistry in the universe activated at the subcellular level.

He got out of his truck and took a few steps toward the shack. A voice shot out, “You are the one!”

Adam stopped in his tracks and looked into her eyes. His heart surged. He noticed a strand of her long brown hair that had blown across her face and stuck to her lip, almost as if it was trying to get into her mouth to floss her straight white teeth.

“I feel the same way!” said Adam smiling.

“Huh?” she said, tilting her head to the left.

Adam clarified, “I think you are ‘The One’ too!”

“I did nothing to you! What do you mean, you believe, ‘I am the one?’” she asked.

“I have faith that you might be the one that God has created for me!” replied Adam.
