Learning to Wait Well

Kyra and Jennie finished counting their money and put their dollars and cents into their coin purses. Kyra glanced over at her sister who was still smiling to herself.

I know what Jennie is thinking about. She can’t wait to get to the market and buy that bracelet. Kyra thought unhappily. The same bracelet I don’t have enough money for! Kyra felt a sudden stab of shame in her heart. She knew that it was her own decision to spend her money last week that left her without money today.

Please God, help me to stop being so impatient. Help me to learn to save and to learn how to say no to myself. I want to be happy for Jennie today when she buys that bracelet even if I have to wait to buy one for myself, Kyra prayed silently.

The girls hurried to the car and off they went with their parents to the farmers market. “I hope you girls wore your comfortable shoes because we have a lot of shopping to do this morning!” Mom said with a happy smile.

“I did!” Jennie answered back.

“So did I,” Kyra replied softly. Looking out the window, Kyra kept thinking about what her sister had told her earlier. Jennie was right. I do spend my money without thinking sometimes. I want everything right now. But that isn’t what God wants. He wants me to be thankful for what I already have, Kyra reminded herself.

Pulling into the large parking area, the girls got out of the car and began walking toward the first market building. “Let’s do our grocery shopping first, sound good?” Mom asked them.

“Sure,” they answered. Before long, the two sisters and their mom were loaded down with bags of fresh fruits and vegetables and lots of other goodies.

“OK, let’s take these bags back to the car, and then we’ll go into the other buildings,” Mom directed.

Once inside the arts and crafts building, both girls’ eyes grew wide with anticipation. There were so many cool things to look at and choose from. Down near the end of the last aisle, Jennie spotted the jewelry stand she was looking for and ran to it. Kyra decided not to join her sister because she didn’t want to feel that same impatient feeling again. Kyra stayed with her mom.

Several minutes later, Jennie came running up to them. “Guess what, Kyra?” Jennie squealed in excitement.

“You bought your bracelet?” Kyra guessed.

“Yes! But it was on sale. Two for one today! Here, this one is for you!” Jennie said as she handed one of the pretty silver bracelets to her sister.

“Oh, Jennie! Thank you. Thank you so much,” Kyra said as she wrapped her arms around her sister and squeezed her in a big hug.
