With his music playing low in the kitchen, Julian sat at the counter reading the letters he had received from his parents in the mail the day before. Since they’d been locked up, they both wrote him letters, letting him know how they were doing and how proud they were of him. On his birthday and holidays, they would call him and he would be so happy to talk to them. When he turned eighteen, the phone calls stopped but the letters still came every three months. He never wrote them back. He just kept the letters and read them whenever he thought about them. Julian recalled the many vacations they had taken and the outings he had with his dad. They went to sports games, ATV riding and with him having a summer birthday, he had the best parties. In fact, he had the best of everything.

When Cassandra took him in, she explained that she and her brother—his dad—grew up poor and he didn’t want him to grow up the same way. Although there were other ways for his parents to get money, they chose the illegal way. They were more concerned with living well and material things than setting a good example and being there for him. He was grateful for what they did for him, yet Julian hated the choices they made because it caused him to grow up without them.

After reading the letters one more time, he stuffed them back in the envelopes that were addressed to him. Moving them to the side, his phone started vibrating on the counter. When he saw his aunt’s face on the screen, he answered.

“Hey, Auntie,” he cheerfully greeted. “What’s going on?”

“Please tell me that Cedric is with you,” she sobbed.

“Nah. He ain’t here. Why?”

“There…there was a shooting…last night at the park where he plays ball at,” Cassandra spoke between sobs. “A lot of people were shot. Some died at the scene but I don’t know if Ced was one of them. I’ve…been calling him…all night and he’s not answering,” she cried.

“Did you check the police station?” he asked frantically.

“I didn’t think to do that. I was praying he would answer. Please. Find my son.”

“Give me an hour or two, and I’ll call you back when I know something.”

Ending the call, he stood to his feet and tucked his phone in his pocket. Julian’s mind was racing as he slid his feet in his Nike slides and snatched up his keys and wallet. Snatching the door open, he stopped in his tracks when he saw his cousin standing there in dirty clothes. Pulling Cedric inside, he pushed the door closed and looked him over to make sure he wasn’t shot. Before he could speak, his cousin threw his arms around him as he started to cry. Returning his embrace, Julian held him as he broke down. After a moment or two, he walked Cedric over to the couch and sat down. Waiting a few minutes for his cousin to calm down, he spoke.
