Is God interested in healing the inner person, as well as the outer person?

* * *

1. God heals the inner person.

Let’s begin by looking in Table M on pages 151–152 at David’s petition to God and see if we can identify with it. In Psalm 41:4, David petitioned God to be merciful and to heal his soul. First, he acknowledged his sin before God because he knew that taking responsibility was an important requirement in obtaining God’s mercy. David was asking God to heal his soul—a soul made sick from sin. David believed that his soul, his inner self, could be healed by God.

In Psalm 147:3, the writer penned, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds [or sorrows]” (NIV, emphasis mine). Brokenhearted refers to the wounds in the innermost portion of ourselves.

In Jeremiah 31:25, God told Jeremiah that He “will [fully] satisfy the weary soul, and . . . replenish every languishing and sorrowful person” (AMP, emphasis mine). In the Hebrew, both weariness and sorrow can refer to the mental or emotional condition of the inner person. God says He will satisfy and He will replenish the deepest part of man’s being.

At another time Jeremiah cried out, “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for Thou art my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14, KJ21). The prophet was talking about much more than his physical condition. He was referring to his soul.

You are probably already familiar with the verse in 3 John, in which the beloved apostle prayed:

Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.

3 John 2, NASB

In addition to being a prayer for the prosperity and health of our souls, it is also a prayer for teaching prosperity in all areas of life, including financial prosperity.

2. Jesus heals the brokenhearted.

Isaiah 53 presents a powerful prophecy concerning Jesus and His coming ministry to reveal the Father’s heart to the people.[1] The Father desires to heal us. In the following verses, note the words we have emphasized that have to do with emotions, or inner hurts.

He was despised and forsaken of men,

A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;

And like one from whom men hide their face

He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

Surely our griefs [sickness] He Himself bore,

And our sorrows He carried;

Yet we ourselves esteemed him stricken,

Smitten of God, and afflicted.

But He was pierced [wounded] through for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities;

The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,

And by His scourging [stripes] we are healed.”

Isaiah 53:3–5, NASB, emphasis mine

These verses offer a powerful listing of pain-related words that mostly refer to inner pain. For example, the Hebrew word for “sorrows” is used throughout the Old Testament to refer to mental or emotional pain. Choli, translated “griefs,” indicates afflictions, casualties, weakness and pain, as well as sickness and disease. It seems clear that more than the physical body is included in the healing and deliverance ministry of Jesus.
