CLOTHING

Clothing includes the various rugs, blankets and sheets worn by the stabled horse. He requires rugs in winter to keep him warm, and in summer to protect him from flies and to keep his coat clean. All stable and day rugs are secured by a front fastening. A leather roller or webbing surcingle can then be fixed round the body. The roller may or may not have a breast girth. Modern rugs have cross-over surcingles and fastenings under the belly, or just leg straps.
