Lisa Grubbins is missing?

My mouth parted. “What do you mean?”

“I thought you knew what words mean, being a librarian.” He sneered. “She’s missing. And it’s because you did something to her.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I said. “I haven’t seen her either. You’re the first person who’s come into the library today.”

His hand clenched. “You’re a liar. You and your cousin did something to her yesterday.”

“I really didn’t.” I backed up a few steps until my feet hit the front of the desk, and then, to my relief, Aunt Adelaide came back into view.

“Is there a problem?” she asked.

“Aunt Adelaide,” I said. “Ah—I think something happened to Lisa. He said she’s missing, but she definitely didn’t come here, did she?”

“Of course she didn’t.” She stepped forward, facing Jamie. “Missing? When did this happen?”

“In the middle of the night,” he growled. “She disappeared. Sneaked out without telling me a thing.”

“Is that… I mean, has she ever done that before?” I regretted the question instantly when he clenched his fist again.

“No, it certainly isn’t normal,” he snarled. “She isn’t at work. She isn’t anywhere. I want you to give her back.”

“She isn’t here,” said Aunt Adelaide. “The library is fitted with alarms that alert us whenever anyone tries to get in, and we have security watching the place overnight.”

By “security,” she meant Sylvester, who wouldn’t have let anyone into the library even as a joke. Not that we could count on the owl jumping to our defence given his current erratic mood.

“Then tell me what you did to her,” Jamie went on. “I know something was funny here yesterday. Lisa herself told me there was a curse.”

My heart jumped. How did she know? She hadn’t seen Aunt Candace when she’d fallen under the spell, had she? Unless she had still been upstairs at the time, and she’d taken advantage of our aunt’s confusion to swipe her notebook from under her nose. For all I knew, that was exactly how she’d obtained it.

“Wherever Lisa is, the library had nothing to do with it,” Aunt Adelaide said firmly. “I’m sure she’ll have a reasonable explanation.”

“A likely story.” He pointed his wand at both of us. “Lisa told me all about your family’s lies. You’re notorious for them. That’s why I’m prepared. Want to tell me the truth, or should I loosen your tongues in my own way?”

Before anyone could move an inch, Sylvester came swooping down and landed on the front desk. “And who might you be?”

Jamie jumped, nearly dropping his wand. “You… you’re talking.”

“This one isn’t very bright, is he?” Sylvester remarked.

The wizard flushed a furious red. “Now your animals are insulting me?”

Oh boy. If he attacked Sylvester… well, as entertaining as it might be to see the owl chase him off or trap him in the Forbidden Room, that wouldn’t help the situation in the slightest.

“Sylvester is our security,” said Aunt Adelaide. “He would have seen if your fiancée came near the library and alerted us at once.”

“Has a fiancée, does he?” said the owl.
