Chapter Thirteen

I sit up in bed with a deep, shuddering breath, panting as if I’ve run for miles.

My fingers claw the covers, pushing them down from their tangle around my body. All the air seems to have been sucked out of the room; the more I gasp, the more my lungs constrict.

Dane is by my side in an instant. “Hey, hey. Calm down. Amethyst, calm. You’re hyperventilating. Cup your hands and breathe into them. That’s it. Good girl. Nice and calm.”

His steady tone eventually does the trick. He strokes my back in soothing circles, as he talks me down from my panic attack.

I grasp the front of his shirt and haul him closer. He comes willingly, climbing onto the bed and holding me in a firm embrace.

“You’re safe now.” He must feel how hard I’m trembling.

“He’s coming.” The words are muffled against Dane’s chest. “He’s coming for all of us. There’s nothing we can do. He’s going to find us, and then he’s going to kill us...”

“I won’t let him.” Dane’s fresh scent rises around me. I focus on pine needles and sandalwood and something slightly smoky underneath.

I manage to slow down my breathing, copying his breathing pattern. In, out. And repeat.

Once it settles, I lean back down against the pillows and attempt a smile.

“I wasn’t hyperventilating,” I manage, and he barks out laughter.

“Sure.”

The mattress dips as he lays down next to me. “Above the covers. All nice and proper,” he says, an edge of wry amusement in his tone.

I roll into him, enjoying the natural heat of his body even through the separating covers.

We lie like that, in silence, until I can’t take the quiet any longer.

“Slide in, under the covers, Dane. But... take off your clothes first. If... if you want.”

If I want?

Hell yes, I want.
