Chapter Nineteen

Ava

I’m standing beneath a Mexican plum tree when Joey texts again.

It’s one of my favorite trees in Pease because it changes all year round. In very early spring, white blossoms cover the branches before its leaves come in. Then green leaves take over as the plums begin to grow, ripening all summer until they become a dark purple red in the hot days before fall. When the trees sense autumn even before the thermometers do, they begin a slow change until every one of them is blanketed in a wild, flaming orange that makes Ruby call them “Ava trees.”

Right now, I’m looking at the green fruitlets, wondering how many will feed birds and insects before they plump and fall to the ground. If I were a bird, this would be like the ice cream shop, and I would eat all of my meals here until I was sick of plums and crunchy beetles sounded good again.

When my phone vibrates, I consider ignoring it. I’m not in the mood for Joey. But it might be Oliver . . .
