Although it was handled in a very quiet manner, news of the annulment of the marriage between Viscount Dorchester and Hermione Newburn eventually reached the ears of Sir Gregory Winston. His sadness was great, and at first he did not mention it to Brianna. But when he had heard of it again, and knew that the knowledge would soon be shared by all Society, he made the quiet announcement to his wife. Though she and Gregory knew the chance of the marriage breaking up was better than the chance that it would prosper, they had both held out hopes.

Brianna greeted the news with soft crying that lasted for several days. She took it very hard, knowing herself to be the cause of the marriage, its dissolution, and most of the pain experienced by the Viscount and his wife. She and Gregory discussed the matter many times, but despite his assurances and support, she felt the full burden of having so interfered in the lives of two people as to cause them such pain and humiliation that an annulment must result.

Gregory, for his part, was very concerned for both Luke and Hermione, but a greater portion of his energy was taken up with trying to discover whether any hint of Brianna’s part in the situation had been spread.

Several weeks passed, and no mention was made, no one stopped speaking when he entered into social gatherings, no sidewise looks or comments made from lips covered by hands, and he began to feel easier. He supposed Hermione and Lord Dorchester had understood that revealing all the particulars of Brianna’s involvement in their situation would only enhance the scandal. But it was several months before he began to truly feel easy in social situations.
