We had barely made it a mile from Amina and Donald’s house before Key’s light snoring could be heard from the back seat.

Omari cleared his throat. “Ay, thanks for what you did at the grocery store. That whole situation’s been playing in the back of my mind almost all day. And if you wouldn’t have gotten me out of there… things coulda went really bad. Thanks for keeping a calm head…” He trailed off.

I waved him off. “No worries. I don’t know how I would feel if I unexpectedly ran into my ex in a public setting, so… there’s that. It just seemed like it was best if we got out of there. I mean, she was looking for a fight, and she was doing all her… the most in front of a crowd and in front of Key. There was no way for things to end well. I just wanted all three of us to get out of there.”

He sighed but kept driving in silence.

“You know we have like, two hours in the car. You can tell me your story, if you want. If you need to talk… to get it out, I’m here. I’ll listen.” I paused thoughtfully before adding, “I should preface that invitation by saying that my own last relationship was a shit show that crashed and burned. So, I don’t have any good advice, pearls of wisdom, or gems to drop. But I will listen.”

He still didn’t speak, but I got the distinct impression that he would… in time. Instead, I filled in the silence.

“Are both of you from Beloit? You and your ex? Were you high school sweethearts or something?”

“We’re both from the area. She’s not from Beloit, but she’s from the area. I didn’t meet her until I was in the league. I was in my seventh year… on my third team, St. Louis. I met her at a benefit for The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Northern Wisconsin. She worked for the Wisconsin Tourism Board, and I… I’m from the community, and I spent some time at The Boys & Girls Club as a kid. So I was there as the keynote speaker and as a donor.

“Anyway, I was introduced to Laila, and she was just… she was like my young boy fantasy in real life—the beautiful small-town girl who had an air of sophistication and cosmopolitan appeal about her, but who also wanted the white picket fence outside of the public eye. Up until Laila, I’d spent my time dating and fucking chicks with that real slick, manufactured look. You know… big ass, miniscule waist, fat thighs, hair always in a perfect ass-touching ponytail or the perfectly beach-waved sew-in—women who understood which one of their sides was the best to be photographed on.

“Those women had a place. They were good as hell for optics. When you wanted to make your socials blow up or you wanted to flex, you just posted a picture of yourself with one of those women on your arm.
