The other two guardsmen snored gently as they sat on the floor on either side of the door – and Cillian could hardly blame them, after everything they had been through that day. If anything, he was sorry that neither of them were able to enjoy a proper bed to rest and heal in.

But there was nothing for it. Not after all that had transpired earlier.

Cillian shifted his weight, but it did nothing to make him more comfortable. The cold stone floor was making his joints ache, and he stood for a few moments to stretch his limbs, knowing he might need to be limber in the event of any trouble. He highly doubted that Finlay would be willing to face him again, when the outcome of such a confrontation would certainly not be in the nobleman’s favor – but he had seen the crazed, desperate, and humiliated look in Finlay’s eyes.

He’d seen that look in the eyes of defeated men before, and he had long since learned not to underestimate what such men might do to regain their pride. Finlay had guardsmen at his disposal, after all, and so those might be sent to kill the Campbell guards and capture the ladies within the room.

Would such a tactic help Finlay? Cillian supposed it might. Indeed, it might even represent his only chance in any hostilities against the Campbells, for that clan would be more hesitant to attack with two of its noblewomen being held at the point of a knife.

How many Herriott fighters might Finlay be able to call upon? Would Cillian be able to hold them all off if it came to that?

He did not know the answers to either of those questions.

That bothered him, certainly – but there was little he could do about it, other than to remain watchful. This was easier said than done. He was far larger and stronger than most men, and his stamina was likewise impressive. Even so, he was still only human, and he required rest like anyone else. Exhaustion was beginning to overtake him, and the wound in his upper arm throbbed.

He wished they were already on their way back to Castle Campbell, so that he might have the promise of a bed in the barracks to look forward to. But of course, he understood why Lady Alba had insisted that they wait until morning. It would have been suicidally stupid for them to travel at night through the same area where they had been attacked by bandits.

Still, it would be another whole day of riding, and Cillian felt tired and sore just from the thought of it.

Then there was the kiss.

He told himself a hundred lies about why he had allowed that kiss to happen. Would it not make Amelia Campbell more likely to trust him – and therefore, would it not ultimately serve his reason for having joined her clan’s fighters to begin with? He supposed he ought to congratulate himself on it, really. Between that and everything
