From Ma Beck’s house, Daniel headed back down the bank, jumped in the river and quickly swam back to the Virginia side. He pulled on his shirt and made his way through the forest until he came to the spot where he had pulled his boat on shore. He paddled across the river to the bank behind his house.

He climbed the bank, crossed the side yard and entered by the kitchen door. Willow was cooking a pot of pinto beans. She was surprised to see him back so early, but the tense look on his face told her something was wrong.

“Willow, there is somethin’ horrible about to happen, and we have to stop it. We don’t have much time either. Ma Beck and Clem are plannin’ to kill Estelle and another girl named Mazie. Some men came lookin’ for her. When they left, Clem came to Ma Beck’s house and admitted he had her. She had sneaked out of the house without his permission—for he probably would not have given it—and had gone to see Ma Beck. Ma Beck had agreed to come to the house and look at him.

Willow had rushed back to tell him that she was coming. He had asked her, in his feeble voice, that did she not understand that Ma Beck could order him to be killed. And whatever Ma Beck requested, the Delegate would see that it was done. After all, she was his mother. At that point, Willow had hugged him tightly to her. “But don’t you understand that you are dyin’, and with Ma Beck’s medicines, you will at least have a chance.”

Within ten minutes, Ma Beck had walked through the door, had taken one look at him and had then turned to Willow and stated with absolute surety that she could help him and that she would be back shortly.

Willow had started crying, and when he asked her
