Day 196

WHATEVER TIME ALLOWED for them to train wasn’t exactly enough to put Pritchard back into fighting shape, but it sure as hell helped. And hurt! And it was only one-hundred-ninety-six days of slacking off and drinking and no longer seeing a point in working out that he had to catch up with.

Rose joined him at the gym every day, in the beginning curling up in an old worn couch that Pritchard remembered having made love to Monica on.

Everywhere he looked, there was a memory of her. And not just her. Memories from his entire childhood and youth were etched into everything, and it all helped him slip back into the mentality needed to help Rose. It ironically also put him closer to Monica.

A few of Joseph’s errand boys kept an eye on Dimitri, and things were brewing. But so far, no one had seen or heard anything about the really dangerous Gavriil being called.

Good. That meant Pritchard had a chance.

Over the years, Cat had grown to hold a prominent position in Papa Joe’s business, and he had his own crew. Some from that crew had slowly begun frequenting Dimitri’s bordello to gather intel on how many guards there were, where they were stationed, weapons, layout of the Slavic Goddesses bordello, and whether Dimitri himself had a daily routine there.

When not working out, Cat and Pritchard planned, using all the intel slowly tricking in.

Rose was always given the choice to be present while they debated the best way forward to protect her, and she almost always was, observing quietly.

But one thing kept nagging Pritchard. The way she shrank in on herself. And that limp handshake. It had only taken the first few days of training to decide to try to change that.

Sweaty and sore, Pritchard stopped beating the worn heavy bag and waved her to her feet. “Rose, do me a favor and come here.”

She stood and came to him. “What?”

“We can find you some gym clothes. Give you a workout, too.”

“Boxing? Me?” She sputtered laughter, and Pritchard grinned, liking the sound.

“Yeah, you. Monica trained here, too. With me. And if you ask me, every young woman should know self-defense. At least the basics.”

She gnawed her lip, and he could almost see the question in her eyes. Could she have protected her father? Their home? If her eyes didn’t give away guilt, then her shrinking in on herself again did.

“No matter what, three against one is never a fair fight, but for you...the point is to at least make you capable of putting up enough of a fight for whoever to lose interest. If you can break a nose and take out a few incisors, all the better.”

She glanced up at him, her mind working overtime. She then looked around, her gaze finally stopping on the heavy bag he’d worked. She ran her hand over the worn leather and tape keeping the thing together.

“I’ve watched Rocky with Dad. This place reminds me of that movie.”

Pritchard smiled, looking around the worn place.
