Chapter Twenty-Three

When she'd woken up that morning, hiking through the woods hadn't been on Sloane's radar. If she'd been waking up on Hope's End with her dog Apollo, it might have been something she'd end up doing later in the day when she needed a break from writing. But she wasn't on Hope's End. She was in San Francisco working her way through her third state park of the day. It was quite the change from the never-ending tea party she'd participated in after Tally returned from her nanas the day before.

Sunday had been both refreshing and weird. There were moments she'd felt guilty for not focusing on the case, but spending the day with Tally while Emily and Cooper met with a wedding planner had done a lot to recharge Sloane's battery. She'd woken up that morning ready to jump into solving the case. It was just too bad the officer she met with didn't feel the same. At least she had Cade's tip to focus on.

It was disappointing she hadn't found what she was looking for yet. She could have been wrong about her theory. Maybe the women hadn't been buried and then swept out to sea with the recent rain. Instead, the killer could have buried them for a while, then when he finished with them, he dumped them unceremoniously into the bay, hoping the current would sweep them out into the open ocean. If that was the case, she was wasting her time.

If she had more information from the case files, maybe she could've saved herself some time. But since she didn't, all Sloane had to work with was her instincts, and her gut was telling her this guy was burying his victims in a place he could go back and visit. Of course, that theory was contingent on her idea he was sticking to a type, pretty, petite, blondes. Usually, when a killer had a specific type, they were a surrogate for someone else. Maybe someone who spurned him or someone he loved deeply but couldn't have. If that was the case, then he'd want to be able to see the women whenever he wanted.

Which was why she had a really good feeling about WestCrest Park. Of the three parks she'd been to so far, this one was the closest to the water. The wooded area of the park, nicknamed Whiskey Woods by local teenagers decades ago, covered nearly two-thirds of the park's coastline and was so densely populated with trees, it made for the perfect burial site.

The only problem with WestCrest Park being the right place was how popular it was. Even at night, people camped in the park, though probably not as often lately, with the weather being what it was. Still, that made WestCrest riskier to use than the other two places she'd visited. But maybe that was part of the thrill. Maybe their unsub, or Unknown Subject, got off on leaving bodies right under the nose of other people. She'd seen it before.
