Chapter Eighteen
âShe robbed me!â
Deven steered with one hand and used the other to pull the phone from her face. No way was she talking to who she thought she was talking to. Not with that attitude. But sure enough, Paulâs name was shown on her screen, along with the timer indicating his impromptu call only twenty-three seconds prior. And even more puzzling was the fact that he was referencing Kennedy.
âPaul, wait a minute. What are you talking about? What did she steal?â
âI knew it was too damn good to be true,â he continued with his rant. âThings were going too perfect.â
âPaul, please calm down. And start from the beginning.â
âI need to show you some stuff I found,â he said. âWhere are you?â
Deven took the off-ramp of the expressway, her eyes dancing between the signs and the GPS map displayed on her navigation system. Twelve minutes away. âIâm headed to that address you gave me,â she admitted. âAmberâs address.â
âI told you the last time I checked the place was for rent.â
âI know. I figured I could talk to the landlord or some neighbors or something.â
Paul was quiet as he considered the alternatives. âIâll meet you over there,â he said quickly. âOn my way.â And he hung up.
Deven placed her phone in her cup holder. Whatever Paul was about to show her, she had already surmised was about to be some real implicating facts. She turned her attention to the road ahead and focused on her journey.
It had been a pure whim to get up that morning and make a trip to the address Paul had given her for Amber. After leaving the police station the previous day, Deven had toyed with the idea. It felt like a shot in the dark. And what did she expect to find anyway? Kennedy would waltz out the front door and admit to all her wrongdoings? Hey Sis, yeah, itâs me. Iâm not really dead and oh yeah, I gave Paul a fake name so I could rob him. Oops. That would be an answer that solved absolutely nothing.
Burlington County, New Jersey certainly wasnât a side of town Deven frequented. Not that she avoided it, she just never really had a reason to stop during the rare times she passed through. And judging by the living quarters and mini marts fringed along the main roads, the area had an established reputation of equal parts hood and country, and the label had become a staple of the community. It definitely didnât seem like the type of lifestyle Kennedy would pick as a residence. Maybe that was the whole point, Deven thought with skepticism. On the surface, this would be the last place someone would look for her. How idyllic if her goal was to disappear.
âTurn right,â the robotic voice prompted and on cue, Deven pulled up to a cluster of detached townhomes that had seen better days. In the entryway, a dilapidated sign poked through the weeds that read, Sienna Courts, and Deven knew she had reached her destination.
