Chapter Five

Barrett never expected a dance floor make out to change her, but it did. She thought about that kiss every day for weeks. That kiss with a stranger. After returning from their semester abroad, Jenna threatened to move out of their shared apartment if Barrett continued to talk about it.

The summer Barrett turned twenty-one, she got an internship running the social media for a photography studio. The studio was a relatively small and new, but Barrett was happy to work there. In fact, it was through her internship that Barrett met both Eliza and Josephine.

Barrett met Eliza two days before her 21st birthday. She’d on a coffee run for the studio employees when she discovered a new coffee shop at the local market. The blonde barista the two baristas were discussing a new club that was opening while Barrett waited for her order.

“And there’s a ton of outside space as well,” the blonde barista explained to her co-worker. “I grew up in New York City, so I’ve been to my fair share of clubs, but this place is great.”

Barrett still had no idea where she wanted to go for her birthday, and the place she was overhearing being talked about seemed like a great idea.

“Sorry, I don’t mean to pry,” Barrett interrupted, “But what was the name of this club?”

“It’s called The Camp,” the woman responded with a smile. “You should check it out.”

“I think I might,” Barrett nodded. The woman’s smile was genuine and Barrett couldn’t help but notice how pretty the woman was when she smiled. She was probably around her age, and Barrett was definitely attracted to her.

“Well let me know if you end up going,” the blonde barista spoke as she handed Barrett her tray of orders.

Before Barrett could ask for the woman’s number, she looked down at the top napkin on her tray of orders. The words on the napkin read:

Call Me: 555-4365 - Eliza

And for the first time in a while, Barrett found herself getting excited about a girl. Jenna was just happy to hear Barrett giddy about someone whose name she actually knew.

Two days later, Barrett texted Eliza, telling her she was going to check out The Camp for her birthday. Eliza responded half an hour later, expressing that she hoped to run into Barrett there. Eliza answered Barrett's text while on the phone with her high school friend, wishing her a happy birthday. Her friend, Cat Scott.

That night, Barrett went home to Eliza’s apartment.

Barrett and Eliza became surprisingly good friends, but both agreed that while the sex was good, that they could never be in a relationship. They worked the friends with benefits angle for seven months, before they stopped. Eliza had met someone else and Barrett was happy for her.

It was the day after the two decided to stop sleeping together, that Barrett came into contact with Josephine. Barrett wouldn’t realize the irony of the situation, the same form of irony that had been following her for her entire life until the day after she and Cat got engaged.
