We follow behind the healers and Broonies who volunteered to carry Eureliaâs body on a slab of ash wood. The scent of death mixes with the piney fragrance of the wood and the flowers surrounding her as everyone moves slowly toward the Bone Forest. Laying her to rest closes the door on an era longer than even my own. And none of us are ready.
Elvenia hasnât cried since the night I traveled to the human world to break the news to her. Latamier is walking on one side of Eureliaâs body, eyes cast away from everything but whatâs before him.
When we approach the Bone Forest Graveyard, I take a deep breath. So much has happened here. The Incubus cornered us here. Milana ripped her darkness from within me here. Mother and Father are both buried here. The Incubusâ death has also left a stain behind here thatâs palpable as we move past it. An inky darkness now dwells here with all the magic thatâs seeped back into the ground.
Elvenia had decided to give her back to the ground, where some choose to burn a seerâs body when they die. I think she wanted somewhere to visit, somewhere tangible to come to converse with the seer who had become her unlikely guardian after the war.
Iâd agreed Eurelia wouldnât have an issue with the way sheâs buried. And if she does? Sheâll tell us about it, surely.
A seer is a magical being even after their death, and their bodies can be used for all types of black magic and demon rousing if left intact, but I donât have the heart to argue these facts with Elvenia. Because then Iâd have to stand next to her and watch her as she witnessed her motherâs body being burned.
Sheâs been through enough.
Father Cianâs speech goes on for only a few moments before the healers surround Eureliaâs body and cast magic around it in swirls of gold and white. Slowly, sheâs lifted off the ground, ash wood floating beneath her, and lowered into the eight-foot hole dug for her to rest in. At the bottom is an ivory casket. Elvenia had been clear she wanted her buried further into the ground, to keep others from sensing her body and trying to steal her.
When the lid closes, I jump. My nerves are on edge enough as it is, and death rattles them further.
As the dirt is magicked back over the hole, Elvenia sniffles, the tears eventually making their way to her eyes. I step forward, steadying her with a hand on her shoulder, and Latamier gives me a nod of appreciation. Somethingâs going on between them, and I donât know if I want to know what it is. But Iâm thankful I can be there for him in a moment such as this. It makes me feel less useless.
If only I could stop my people from dying.
We all stand back and wait as the gravestone is floated over and placed. But more so, we wait for when the dirt claims her back as its own.
