You nod to Hydra and consent to the attack.

Hydra slithers forward with haste and springs into action. Before the gryphon can react, she strikes it with the sharp bladelike end of her tail.

The gryphon opens its beak and cries out in pain. Its body begins to shrink rapidly. The feathers on its front and fur on its hind legs change into black clothes. The talons become hands, and the lion’s paws turn into feet. The tail disappears, and the beak morphs into a crooked nose. Soon, the monster reverts back into an elderly woman.

“Gretchen,” Hydra says in shock. “The witch.”

“What?” you ask. “You know her?”

The witch gasps for breath. “You have finally gotten your revenge,” she says to Hydra. “But the gryphon curse transfers from victim to victor.”

“I didn’t want this,” Hydra affirms.

“The gryphon self-curse was an accident,” she admits. “Once the gryphon, I could not fight the urge to attack. I failed to resist the dark effects of the spell.” She turns to Hydra and says, “I doubt you will be able to either.”

With that, the witch takes her last breath and her body goes limp.

Hydra coughs and her body starts to shake. In mere moments, her transformation begins.
