The Vittores are throwing a dinner party. It’s to celebrate Luca’s engagement and also double as a rehearsal dinner for the wedding itself. I know because I’ve been dragged out of my room to attend this awful event.

Serena arrived at my door with a new dress and a box of apology chocolates this afternoon. I cooperated for the white chocolate fudge dipped truffles. Not for her pouting lips or the Jimmy Choos that came with the dress. Though they were a welcome bonus.

My nails are manicured, my eyebrows plucked, every hair on my body strip waxed until I screamed. When I asked the point of being bald as a baby, Serena asked why on earth I’d ever willingly stuff a woolly mammoth into my panties. I had shut my mouth after that because I did not have a woolly mammoth down there. I swear.

Now I’m wearing an expensive perfume I can’t name and carrying a handbag that cost more than three months of rent at the best complex I’ve ever lived in. My makeup is professional, and my hair has been washed and silk pressed. Normally, my afro curls rest on my shoulders, but straightened like this, they tumble halfway down my back in a curtain of black glossy locks.

Even I think I look different when I pass a mirror hanging on the wall in the back of the dining room. The Vittores rented out a hotel for the event, so the ‘dining room’ is technically a grand hall, but it’s been sectioned off by hanging drapes and decorated to look like an elegant dining room from a family home. A home large enough to house over 300 ridiculously rich gangsters.

I thought I saw suits and ties at the garden party, but this is entirely different. Diamonds, pearls, and shoes shined brightly enough to see my reflection in them. The hall is filled with people wealthy enough to purchase this very building in cash. Twice. And they’re all as dangerous as the Russians who would’ve killed me.

A shiver runs down my spine as I shuffle to the back of the room. I’m not uncomfortable because of how rich and powerful these people are, I feel weird because they’re all staring at me. But not in a way that makes me feel beautiful. They look like they hate me.

The women openly shake their heads at me. The men leer like I’m a new doll on a shelf for them to buy. I don’t know what’s going on but it’s clear my presence is causing a stir. I thought these people would welcome me. Considering I’m the one helping them get justice for the Vittore prince. But right now, it seems like my endeavors mean nothing to them. It seems like I’ve somehow become their enemy.

I tuck my chin and keep walking toward the back. My feet practically glide over the carpet in my ridiculously comfortable heels. I pass a display of seafood on ice which sits beside a table of hors d’oeuvres.
